Junior Data Scientist / AI Engineer – Conversational Voice AI

About iovox

iovox provisions and manages phone numbers and builds voice AI agents for clients across a range of industries, including automotive and real estate. Our agents handle real conversations at scale — qualifying leads, answering questions, routing callers, and capturing the information our clients care about. The quality of those conversations comes down to how well the underlying agents are designed, and that's where this role lives.

The Role

This is a hands-on, client-facing role for someone early in their data science career who's excited about large language models and conversational AI. The majority of your time will be split between two things: crafting the prompts that define how our voice agents behave, and working directly with clients to understand what they actually need from an agent before you build it.

You'll own agents end to end — from the first requirements conversation with a client, through prompt design and testing, to iterating on live call behaviour once the agent is deployed. It's a great fit for someone who likes the technical craft of getting a model to do exactly the right thing, but also enjoys talking to people and translating fuzzy business goals into something concrete.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

What You'll Do

  • Design and write agent prompts that define an agent's persona, conversation flow, and edge-case handling for tasks like lead qualification, call routing, and information capture.
  • Gather and document requirements from clients — running discovery conversations to understand their goals, their callers, the information they need collected, and the outcomes that matter to them.
  • Translate client needs into working agents, making deliberate, well-reasoned prompt decisions rather than trial-and-error tweaks.
  • Test and iterate on agent behaviour using real call transcripts, identifying where conversations break down and refining prompts to fix them.
  • Tune for the things that matter on real calls — keeping conversations brief and natural, handling unexpected caller inputs gracefully, and capturing data accurately.
  • Work cross-functionally with engineering and product to feedback what you learn from agent behaviour and client conversations.

What We're Looking For

  • A degree in a quantitative or technical field (data science, computer science, linguistics, statistics, or similar), or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong written communication — you can write clearly, precisely, and with attention to nuance. Prompt engineering is, at heart, a writing craft.
  • Comfort with, and genuine interest in, large language models and how they behave.
  • Good analytical instincts — you can look at a transcript or a dataset and work out why something went wrong, not just that it did.
  • Confidence talking to clients and stakeholders, asking the right questions, and turning vague requests into clear requirements.
  • A methodical, detail-oriented approach. Small changes in wording can have large effects, and you care about getting them right.
