Junior Designer – Kitchens & Interiors
Bath | Full Time | £28,000–£30,000 depending on experience
You don’t need to be an experienced designer. You need to want to become one.
The opportunity
We are looking for someone at the beginning of their design career who wants to become exceptionally good at it.
Hobsons Choice designs and delivers high-end interior projects for private clients. Our work extends across kitchens, bathrooms, dressing rooms, studies, living spaces and other areas of the home.
Our designers do far more than simply design a room.
They begin by understanding the space and how the client wants to live within it. From there, they develop layouts and concepts, specify furniture, materials and appliances, and produce the detailed drawings needed to bring the design to life.
They present their ideas clearly, manage budgets and work closely with architects, interior designers and other professionals throughout the process. Just as importantly, they help clients make confident decisions about their homes.
It takes time to learn how to do all of that well.
This role has been created to provide that opportunity.
The role
You’ll join our Bath design team and work closely alongside our experienced designers. You’ll support them on live projects while gradually developing the skills and knowledge needed to become a Hobsons Choice designer in your own right.
Initially, much of your contribution is likely to be technical. You’ll help to produce and develop CAD drawings, survey information, specifications and the detailed information required to turn a design into a project that can actually be built.
But your involvement will go much further than producing drawings.
You’ll sit in on client meetings and hear how experienced designers establish a brief, explore ideas and discuss budgets. You’ll see designs being developed, challenged and refined. You’ll be involved in presentations, site visits and surveys, and you’ll work with product suppliers and our project management team.
Most importantly, you’ll follow projects through the whole process, from the earliest conversations with a client through to installation and completion.
The intention is for you to understand the entire project, rather than simply being given isolated pieces of work to complete.
As your knowledge and confidence grow, so will your responsibility.
Over time, you’ll begin to develop elements of schemes yourself. You’ll present ideas, communicate directly with clients and other design professionals, and gradually take greater ownership of projects. Ultimately, the aim is for you to take responsibility for projects of your own.
The longer-term opportunity is to progress from Junior Designer to Designer and, eventually, Senior Designer. As the team continues to grow, there may also be the opportunity for you to support and develop junior designers joining behind you.

What you’ll learn
You’ll develop a detailed understanding of high-end kitchen, bathroom and interior design, spatial planning, furniture construction and detailing.
You’ll learn about appliances, materials and finishes, as well as CAD, technical documentation and surveying. You’ll also develop an understanding of pricing, specification, client presentations and project delivery.
Alongside the design and technical knowledge, you’ll learn the commercial side of the role: how to understand what a client really wants, develop the right solution, present it effectively and turn a good design into a successful project.
You’ll receive dedicated product training and will have opportunities to visit our manufacturing partners and suppliers in both the UK and Europe.
Working with the senior design team
A significant part of the role will involve becoming a genuine support to one or more of our senior designers.
That means properly understanding the projects you are working on.
You’ll help to develop drawings and specifications, prepare information for meetings and investigate products and technical details. You’ll record design decisions and help to make sure that the information surrounding each project remains accurate, organised and complete.
But we don’t want you simply to wait for somebody to give you the next task.
As you become more capable and gain a deeper understanding of the projects, we want you to begin anticipating what is needed. The aim is for you to become a genuine part of the project team: someone who understands what is happening, knows what needs to happen next and can make a meaningful contribution.
The more capable you become, the more you’ll be trusted with.
Who we’re looking for
A degree in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, Architecture, Product Design or a related discipline would be useful. In particular, it may give you a good foundation in CAD and technical drawing. However, a degree isn’t essential.
We’re much more interested in your potential, your attitude and your desire to learn.
You may have just graduated. You might already have a year or two of experience within an interior design or architectural practice. Alternatively, you may have taken a completely different route but can demonstrate a genuine interest in interiors, spatial design and the way things are made.
You’ll need to be comfortable with both the creative and technical sides of design.

Attention to detail is important. So is curiosity.
We’re looking for somebody who asks questions, absorbs information quickly and wants to understand why something has been designed or constructed in a particular way.
You’ll also need to enjoy working with people.
A successful Hobsons Choice designer needs to build strong relationships with private clients, as well as with architects, interior designers, contractors, developers and suppliers. We won’t expect you to have all of those skills fully developed when you arrive, but you should want to develop them.
Commercial awareness matters too.
Ultimately, our designers don’t simply produce good design. They need to understand their clients, communicate their ideas successfully and win projects.
You won’t be expected to do all of that from day one. You will, however, be given the opportunity to learn how.
CAD and technical skills
Previous CAD experience would be extremely useful, particularly if it has been gained through interior design, interior architecture or architecture.
We currently work extensively in Vectorworks, but experience with another professional CAD package is absolutely transferable.
More important than knowing a particular piece of software is being comfortable thinking technically. You should have an interest in dimensions, plans, elevations, sections and construction details, and in understanding how a drawing relates to something that will eventually be manufactured and built.

Our intention is to develop people within Hobsons Choice.
As your capability grows, you’ll move from supporting projects to contributing to them. From there, you’ll begin taking greater responsibility, eventually developing, presenting and winning projects of your own.
In time, you may progress to become a Senior Designer, taking responsibility for increasingly complex and high-value projects and developing long-standing relationships with clients and other design professionals.
Our aim is to build the next generation of the Hobsons Choice design team by giving talented people the opportunity to learn directly from some of the most experienced designers already within the business.
Location: Hobsons Choice, Bath
Role: Full-time
Salary: £28,000–£30,000 depending on experience
Working hours: 40 hours per week, 8:30am–5:30pm
Working pattern: Monday to Saturday rota, normally including alternate Saturdays, with a day off in lieu
Holiday: 25 days per year, plus statutory/public holidays
Driving licence: A full UK driving licence required
