Junior Developer

We are looking for a Junior Developer to join our in-house software team. You will work on the systems that keep the business moving, including our customer ordering portal, websites, mobile apps and internal tools, with hands-on guidance from an experienced developer and a clear path to grow your skills.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Working under the direction and guidance of the Head of Software Engineering to support the development, testing and maintenance of internal software applications and systems
- Assisting with the development of customer ordering portals, websites, mobile apps and internal tools used across the business
- Writing, testing and debugging code in Laravel, PHP and JavaScript under the guidance of experienced developers
- Investigating and resolving technical issues and supporting colleagues with software-related queries
- Working with MySQL and MariaDB databases to support business applications and operational processes
- Making updates and improvements to existing systems to improve reliability, performance and user experience
- Collaborating with colleagues across the wider business to understand requirements and deliver practical solutions
- Documenting technical changes and contributing to code reviews and development best practice
- Learning new technologies, frameworks and development techniques as part of your continued professional development

Essential Skills and Experience
- Foundational programming knowledge in PHP or JavaScript
- Basic knowledge of SQL and relational databases such as MySQL or MariaDB, including writing simple queries
- Basic understanding of HTML, CSS and JavaScript
- Good communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical colleagues
- Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to problem solving
- A willingness to learn, take feedback and develop your technical skills

Desirable Skills and Experience
- Exposure to Laravel or another MVC framework
- Familiarity with Git and GitHub, including working with branches and pull requests
- Any exposure to React Native or other mobile app development
- Awareness of REST APIs and JSON
- Experience with Linux servers, SSH or panel-based hosting such as Plesk or cPanel
- Relevant coursework, personal projects, internship experience or qualifications in Software Development, Computer Science or a related subject
- An interest in how technology can improve business processes in the equipment hire and service industry
