Position: Junior Electrical / Electronics Engineer

Company Description
Optera is an Australian deep-tech company developing neuromorphic sensing systems for demanding aerospace and defence applications. Our flagship work centres on event-based vision — sensors that respond to scene changes with microsecond latency and ultra-low power consumption — and their integration into intelligent payloads for UAVs and other platforms.
Our UK operations are growing, and we are looking for a junior engineer to join a small, highly technical team and contribute to cutting-edge sensor development and experimentation.
Role Description
You will work alongside our Senior Researcher (neuromorphic vision applications), our Payload Engineer, and the CTO to support the development, testing, and integration of neuromorphic vision sensors. This is a hands-on, lab-and-field role that combines electronics, embedded systems, and applied signal processing. You will be trained in the use of event-based vision sensors and will play an active part in designing and running experiments, from bench setup through to data collection and analysis.
The role will involve travel within the UK and occasionally within Europe for field trials, partner visits, and conferences.

- Design, assemble, and test printed circuit boards (PCBs) for sensor integration and prototype payloads
- Test, characterise, and repair electronic assemblies and sensor modules
- Support the set-up and execution of neuromorphic vision experiments, including data acquisition and logging
- Assist with FPGA-based signal processing pipelines for event-based sensor data
- Write and maintain software tools for sensor interfacing, data parsing, and basic analysis
- Document experimental results, hardware configurations, and test procedures
- Collaborate with senior researchers and engineers to iterate on hardware and software designs
- Travel to field trial sites and partner facilities in the UK and Europe as required
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a closely related discipline
- Hands-on PCB design experience — layout, fabrication, bring-up, and debugging
- Practical electronics skills: soldering (including SMD), bench instruments (oscilloscope, signal analyser, multimeter), and fault diagnosis
- Basic programming ability in Python and/or C/C++ for embedded or data-processing tasks
- Foundational understanding of signal processing concepts (sampling, filtering, frequency-domain analysis)
- Willingness and ability to travel within the UK and Europe
- Right to work in the United Kingdom

Desirable Skills
- Experience with FPGA development (VHDL or Verilog; Xilinx or Intel/Altera toolchains)
- Familiarity with event-based or neuromorphic sensors (e.g. dynamic vision sensors / DVS)
- Experience with ROS, embedded Linux, or real-time systems
- Knowledge of computer vision or machine learning techniques applied to sensor data
- Experience working in an aerospace, defence, or research environment
