About Silentnight
At Silentnight, we’ve been helping the nation sleep better for 80 years. As one of the UK’s most recognised sleep brands, we’re proud of our heritage, our people and the products we make here in the UK. Today, we’re continuing to evolve our business while keeping our focus on what matters – great products, great service and a great place to work.
Purpose
The Junior Infrastructure Engineer will provide day-to-day technical support to users while developing the skills and experience required to take on increasing responsibility for Silentnight’s IT infrastructure.
The role will initially be approximately 50% user support and 50% infrastructure activity. As experience develops, there will be opportunities to become more involved in infrastructure, security and technical projects.
As part of a small technical team, the role will always retain an element of hands-on support. However, a key objective will be to identify recurring issues and help introduce solutions that reduce reactive support and create more time for proactive improvement.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide technical support to users, taking ownership of incidents and service requests through to resolution or escalation.
- Build, configure and deploy PCs, laptops and other end-user equipment.
- Administer user accounts, Microsoft 365 and Entra ID services.
- Support endpoint and server patching, backup checks and infrastructure monitoring.
- Assist with cyber security activities, including endpoint protection, vulnerability remediation and security monitoring.
- Troubleshoot network connectivity issues and work with third-party suppliers where specialist support is required.
- Maintain accurate technical documentation, asset records and support procedures.
- Use PowerShell and other tools to improve or automate routine support and administration activities.
- Participate in infrastructure and security projects, progressively taking ownership of smaller pieces of work.
- Identify recurring support issues and recommend technical or process improvements.
- Participate in planned out-of-hours maintenance once sufficient experience has been gained.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Knowledge and Skills
Ideally, the successful candidate will have 1–2 years’ experience in an IT support role, although candidates with less experience and strong practical skills will be considered. We’re looking for practical troubleshooting experience and working knowledge of Windows 11, Microsoft 365, Active Directory, Group Policy and basic networking, including TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS and Wi-Fi.
Desirable Experience
Exposure to any of the following would be advantageous: Entra ID, VLANs, PowerShell, Windows Server, Intune, Azure, security tools, virtualisation, backups and infrastructure monitoring.
An IT apprenticeship, technical qualification or relevant certification would be beneficial but is not essential. Practical commercial experience will be considered particularly valuable.

Candidate Attributes
We are looking for someone who:
- Is enthusiastic about technology and keen to develop beyond traditional 1st-line support.
- Is self-motivated, curious and enjoys troubleshooting technical problems.
- Takes ownership of issues and is prepared to investigate rather than immediately escalate.
- Communicates well with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
- Is organised, methodical and able to prioritise competing demands.
- Enjoys learning new technologies and understanding how systems work.
- Looks for better ways of doing things, including automation and removing recurring support issues.
- A genuine interest in technology outside of work would be particularly welcomed, such as running a home lab or home network, building PCs, or experimenting with networking, cloud, virtualisation or automation technologies.
Development Opportunity
This role is intended to provide a pathway from IT support into infrastructure engineering.
Working within a small technical team will provide exposure to a broad range of technologies, including Microsoft cloud services, networking, virtualisation, cyber security, backup, monitoring, automation and infrastructure projects.
As knowledge and confidence develop, the successful candidate will be encouraged to take greater responsibility for infrastructure improvements and projects, while continuing to support the day-to-day needs of the business.
