Junior Operations Engineer – Linux, AWS & Infrastructure

Ready to turn your Linux knowledge into a career in infrastructure and cloud engineering?

Want hands-on exposure to AWS, databases, monitoring, networking and cyber security rather than being boxed into one technology?

Looking for a junior engineering role where training is genuinely part of the opportunity?

Our client is looking for a Junior Operations Engineer to join a collaborative technology team responsible for keeping a broad infrastructure estate reliable, secure and performing at its best. This is an opportunity to build an unusually varied technical skill set. You’ll work across Linux, AWS cloud infrastructure, databases, monitoring and observability, backups, virtualisation and networking, with training and established playbooks helping you get up to speed.

The aim isn't for you to know everything on day one. It's to give you the environment and support to become increasingly confident and independent across a genuinely broad technology stack.

Why This Role is Great

Rather than spending your time focused on one narrow area, you'll get exposure to the systems and infrastructure behind modern digital platforms.

You’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Master infrastructure monitoring and observability, helping identify issues quickly and continually improving coverage across servers, databases and services.
  • Build cloud engineering experience by working with AWS alongside on-premises infrastructure.
  • Develop database operations skills across clustered database environments, including MySQL, PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Own critical backup and recovery activities, helping ensure systems and data can be restored reliably when required.
  • Build your Linux expertise while also gaining experience across Windows and virtualised environments.
  • Learn infrastructure maintenance and patching, contributing directly to system security, stability and availability.
  • Explore networking, automation and cyber security as your knowledge and responsibilities grow.
  • Develop real technical ownership, progressing from supported learning and established playbooks towards independently managing technologies within the estate.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

This is deliberately a broad infrastructure operations role rather than a traditional DBA position.

Some SQL knowledge can be useful, but your development will extend far beyond databases.

About You

You might already have some professional IT experience, or you may be earlier in your career with strong hands-on technical knowledge and the motivation to develop it further.

Our client's wishlist includes someone who enjoys Linux and infrastructure, approaches technical problems methodically and takes satisfaction from understanding why something works – or why it doesn't.

You’ll be able to build experience with technologies including AWS, Linux, Windows, VMware, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MS SQL Server, Git/GitLab, Puppet, Grafana, Prometheus, Loki and Tempo, alongside networking, hardware and identity technologies.

AWS exposure includes services across areas such as managed databases, compute, storage, networking, content delivery and certificates.

You certainly don't need experience with everything listed above. Strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, curiosity and a proactive approach to problem-solving are particularly important.

If you've developed transferable skills through another infrastructure, systems, support, cloud or technical environment, we'd still encourage you to apply.

What You'll Build Towards

As your experience develops, you'll take greater responsibility for keeping critical infrastructure available, performant, secure and recoverable.

You'll build practical knowledge around reliable backups and disaster recovery, comprehensive monitoring, infrastructure stability and maintaining well-managed server environments. You'll also learn how effective operations teams respond when priorities change and collaborate with software, product and wider technology colleagues.

The Details

This is a permanent, 37.5-hour-per-week position, with standard working hours of Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:30pm.

There will occasionally be planned out-of-hours work when critical systems require maintenance or patching. The role is also subject to background screening.

Ready to Build Your Infrastructure Engineering Career?

If you're technically curious and want a role where you can develop across Linux, AWS, cloud infrastructure, databases, monitoring, networking and security, this could give you the breadth you've been looking for. You don't need to tick every box. If you have relevant or transferable technical skills and the appetite to keep learning, apply today to find out more about the Junior Operations Engineer opportunity.
