About the Opportunity
We are seeking a motivated Junior Researcher / Early-Career Researcher to join CATALYSE, a Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Staff Exchanges project focused on advancing Direct Air Capture (DAC) and CO₂ utilisation technologies for renewable fuel production (including DME pathways).
This role offers a unique international research experience, combining academic excellence with real-world industrial exposure, through secondments at leading partner institutions and collaboration with non-academic partners, including EGB Engineering.
About CATALYSE
CATALYSE brings together universities, research institutes, and industry partners across Finland, Norway, the UK, China, Nigeria, and South Africa. The project aims to:
- Develop novel DAC systems and materials
- Integrate CO₂ capture with utilisation pathways
- Enable scalable, energy-efficient routes to low-carbon and renewable fuels
- Train the next generation of researchers through structured international secondments
This role is ideal for candidates who want to move between lab, model, and application, and gain experience in how research translates into deployable engineering solutions.

The Role
As a Junior Researcher, you will:
- Contribute to DAC and CO₂ utilisation research, including:
- Process modelling and system analysis
- Experimental data interpretation and validation
- Early-stage materials or catalyst screening
- Participate in international secondments at one or more CATALYSE partner host organisations
- Collaborate across academic and industrial teams, adapting research outputs to different environments
- Support techno-economic thinking, scale-up considerations, and integration studies
- Produce clear, well-documented research outputs suitable for cross-partner use
During industry-facing secondments (e.g. with EGB Engineering), you will gain insight into:
- Engineering constraints and system integration
- Translating research results into engineering-ready assumptions
- Communicating research outcomes to mixed technical audiences
Candidate Profile
Essential
- MSc (or final-year MSc) in Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Energy Systems, Physics, or a related discipline
- Strong analytical skills and interest in climate-tech or low-carbon energy
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in an international setting
- Willingness to travel for medium-term secondments

Desirable
- Experience with process modelling, numerical tools, or experimental research
- Familiarity with carbon capture, catalysis, or energy systems
- Programming or modelling skills (e.g. Python, MATLAB, Aspen/HYSYS)
- Interest in industry-academia collaboration
