Working within the CIPD People Management editorial team in Wonderly
People Management’s award-winning magazine, produced by Wonderly, a division of Haymarket, on behalf of the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development (CIPD), has a circulation of nearly 140,000, and a daily email newsletter that reaches 120,000 subscribers, while our digital content is increasingly multi-channel.
People Management, one of the UK’s most popular business brands, has an exciting vacancy for a junior staff writer, ideally suited to a new journalism/NCTJ graduate looking to take the first step in their career, or someone with relevant experience looking to carve out a career in B2B journalism.
The Role
The Junior Staff Writer will produce accurate, engaging and best-practice-led editorial content for People Management’s audience of HR professionals and business leaders.
Working across digital, email, social media and print channels, the role will contribute to the daily news cycle, research and pitch ideas, and develop longer-form content for the quarterly magazine.
With support and guidance from experienced editorial colleagues, the Junior Staff Writer will build their knowledge of the HR function, develop their journalism skills and establish a network of relevant professional contacts.
Responsibilities
News and content creation
- Research and write accurate, engaging and timely daily news articles under the guidance of the News Editor.
- Monitor relevant news, current affairs and developments within the HR function and wider arena of work and employment, identifying potential stories and contributing ideas to the editorial pipeline.
- Conduct research and interviews with relevant sources, checking facts and ensuring content meets People Management’s editorial standards.
- Research and write longer-form digital and print features as required.
- Adapt content and writing style appropriately for different channels, formats and audiences.
Digital publishing and audience engagement
- Build and schedule the daily email newsletter using the relevant publishing software.
- Support the publication and promotion of editorial content across People Management’s social media channels.
- Ensure published content is accurate, clearly presented and appropriately formatted for the relevant platform.
- Develop an understanding of audience interests and use available insight to support the development of relevant content.
Relationships and editorial development
- Attend relevant events and develop professional contacts within the HR and wider business community.
- Work collaboratively with editorial colleagues, contributing ideas and supporting the effective delivery of content across different channels.
- Respond constructively to editorial feedback and apply guidance to continually improve the quality of work.
- Develop knowledge of People Management’s audience, subject matter and editorial approach.
Editorial administration
- Monitor the editorial inbox, responding to or forwarding enquiries as appropriate.
- Maintain accurate records and supporting information relating to assigned stories and content.
- Undertake relevant editorial administration and provide reasonable support to the wider team when required.
Key Relationships
The Junior Staff Writer will report to the Content Lead and work closely with the News Editor and Staff Writers to research, pitch and produce content for the daily news cycle.
The role will also collaborate with the Editor, Deputy Editor and wider People Management editorial team to produce longer-form print and digital content and support the delivery of the editorial schedule.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
