Role Overview
A practical, technology-focused role where you start by assisting experienced surveyors and progressively develop the skills to become an independent surveyor/geospatial technician.

Typical Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience. Typical work includes the following duties and responsibilities:
- Carrying out site surveys and precise measurements
- Learning to use equipment such as GNSS, total stations, laser scanners, and drones
- Processing survey data and producing 2D plans and 3D models
- Working across varied projects, including construction, infrastructure, utilities, and environmental work
- Developing technical knowledge in areas such as GIS, surveying, geodesy, and data processing
Academy Geomatics is also supporting the Level 3 Geospatial Survey Technician apprenticeship, a 24-month programme combining workplace experience with formal training.
Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.
Course Contents
- Comply with health and safety regulations
- Plan and prepare Risk Assessment and Method Statements (RAMS) and report any additional controls required
- Select and use personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Carry out adjustment checks on survey equipment
- Interpret information from client drawings and specifications
- Gather and interpret information from a range of sources
- Communicate with others verbally, for example colleagues and stakeholders
- Plan surveys selecting survey equipment for a project according to the client's specification
- Planning routes to existing and new sites
- Establish a survey control on site for example using total station, GNSS, or levels
- Use setting out engineering equipment and techniques, for example measuring tapes and string, distances and bearings, total station using coordinates to peg out coordinates, grid lines, and offsets
- Use survey equipment, for example total stations, levels, laser scanners, and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) using geodetic parameters
- Capture and record geospatial survey data, for example topographic, river sections, drainage invert surveys, volumetric calculations, as-built surveys, and measured building surveys
- Select and use surveying processing software for processing data into either 2D or 3D drawings or 3D models
- Produce geospatial survey reports using computer software
- Apply quality assurance procedures: site work, drawing, model, or report
- Manage time and tasks to meet project deadlines
- Comply with relevant industry legislation and regulations when undertaking geospatial work
- Communicate in writing with others, for example internal and external customers, colleagues, and managers
- Comply with environmental, social, human, and economic sustainability regulations and requirements, for example safe disposal of waste, re-cycling or re-use of materials, efficient use of resources, contributing to the community, volunteering within the geospatial industry

Entry Requirements
- GCSE in:
- 4 GCSE's including Maths and English (grade Grades 9-4 (A-C))
- Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Additional Information
There is a possibility of overtime, weekend/night shift work + working away. This role will also involve working outdoors in all weather, with early starts. Please apply only if you are comfortable with these requirements.

- English/maths - confidence with measurements, angles, distances, coordinates, and calculations is essential.
- Physical/practical ability - you must be comfortable working outdoors in different weather conditions and carrying/setting up surveying equipment.
- You must be responsible with expensive equipment and able to work independently once trained.
- Willingness to learn is probably one of the most important qualities for an apprentice. You won't be expected to know everything when you start.
