HMRC's Taxes, Benefits & Enterprise Operations Platform Team is seeking experienced Technical Architects to help shape the future of our critical national tax infrastructure. The team manages and oversees suppliers responsible for operating and delivering services on the Enterprise Tax Management Platform (ETMP) - a core component of the UK's Critical National Infrastructure - and HMRC's corporate IT services through the Enterprise Operations Platform (EOPS).

The team forms part of the Chief Engineering and Platform Office (CEPO) within the Chief Data and Information Office (CDIO) Directorate.

HMRC is currently undergoing one of the largest transformation programmes in government to modernise and future proof its IT estate. As part of this, we are evolving one of the public sector's most complex SAP landscapes, moving from SAP ECC to SAP S/4HANA on Sovereign Cloud.

Our Technical Architecture team plays a central role in this transformation - defining and governing technology strategies, designing end to end architecture, and steering large scale change across a dynamic, high value environment. Working across multiple programmes and services, the team develops strategic roadmaps and ensures technology decisions align with HMRC's long term objectives.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity to join a forward thinking, mission driven team at the forefront of SAP modernisation. Your expertise will directly influence the design and delivery of secure, scalable, and resilient services that make a meaningful difference to millions of HMRC customers and colleagues across the UK.

Job Description

The Junior Technical Architect will play a key role as part of a technical architecture team across multiple Product, Platform, and major project teams, providing expert technical leadership and architectural guidance. The postholder will bring deep knowledge of enterprise technologies, with a particular focus on SAP S/4HANA, as the organisation undertakes a major system conversion from the current SAP ECC platform.

In this role, you will support the design, development, and transition to the new strategic platform, ensuring that solutions are robust, secure, and aligned to the wider end to end technical architecture. You will also contribute to business as usual activities, including shaping proof of concepts and developing innovative solutions that enable reliable operational delivery.

The role requires a flexible and adaptable approach, balancing priorities and supporting a diverse range of services as organisational needs evolve.

Person specification

  • Participate in the technical design of systems and services, articulating and justifying design decisions throughout the development and implementation of the new SAP S/4HANA platform.
  • Apply broad technical expertise across CDIO to translate complex technical and operational requirements into robust, scalable, and secure solution designs.
  • Drive the execution of S/4HANA migration activities, including development, testing, and deployment of SAP and non SAP integrations.
  • Support system integration testing (SIT), user acceptance testing (UAT) and contribute to detailed cutover planning to ensure a smooth transition to the new platform.
  • Provide hyper care and post go live support, troubleshooting issues and ensuring early stabilization of services.
  • Oversee and produce high quality documentation, including technical specifications, configuration guides, and integration mapping artefacts.
  • Act as a bridge between business requirements and technical implementation, ensuring alignment between functional needs and technical solutions.
  • Work closely with internal HMRC teams, systems integrators (SIs), and vendors, ensuring cohesive delivery, effective issue resolution, and successful outcomes.
  • Collaborate confidently with technical and non technical stakeholders, building strong relationships and promoting clear, transparent communication.
  • Ensure service assurance and proactive risk management, identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks throughout the delivery lifecycle.
  • Support major incidents and continuous service improvement, providing expert input to resolve issues rapidly and improve platform resilience and performance.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
