Role Overview

The Junior Technical Designer role is typically an entry-to-mid-level position that supports the technical design and documentation process across various project phases. The Junior Technical Designer supports the production of technical drawings and construction documentation within a design & build team. Guided by senior colleagues, they help create accurate, compliant, and coordinated documentation, translating design concepts into constructible solutions. The role suits a detail-oriented, eager learner with a strong foundation in architectural or interior technical design.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategy

  • Work as a key support member of each project team, understand your roles and responsibilities and those of others, own and close items as they arise, ensure good communication throughout to project end.
  • Stay ahead of design trends and emerging technologies — especially in regard to compliance and sustainability.

Project Delivery/Technical Development

  • Understand ‘The Oktra Way’ — our processes, standards, sustainability practices, quality measures, and compliance requirements — across all roles and responsibilities.
  • Assist in managing client expectations (when required) and maintain clear communication on technical aspects of the design.
  • Assist in the creation of technical design documentation from schematics, sketches through to construction.
  • Assist in the creation of the coordination between architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, public health etc., and the full construction team.
  • Assist in the translation of conceptual designs into detailed, buildable solutions without compromising design intent, cost, compliance, or programme.
  • Assist in the creation of all technical drawing packages from design development to construction documentation including practical completion.
  • Assist in the review of reference materials and site documentation to ensure design accuracy through allocated projects.
  • Assist in technical design standards and best practices.

Quality & Risk Management

  • Be part of quality assurance and control reviews.
  • Assist in the identification of design risks early and assist in technical solutions where possible.

Coordination

  • Assist in the collaboration with preconstruction, commercial, project managers, site teams, consultants, and clients etc. as a professional team to ensure absolute project success.

Documentation & Standards including Compliance

  • Assist in the maintenance of drawing files, naming conventions, and documentation sets.
  • Learn regulations and standards to strengthen your design work.
  • Assist in the statutory applications process.
  • Learn the roles that Oktra and its team members undertake under CDM (Construction (Design & Management)) and Building Regulations.

Site & Construction Support

  • Assist in the support of technical information etc. for our site teams.
  • Shadow your technical team on site visits to gain valuable knowledge.
  • Shadow your technical team in internal team meetings and coordination reviews when possible.

Production

  • Technical design specifications and associated schedules
  • Technical design drawings and associated documentation
  • Creation and/or development of Revit model and CAD/pdf files from model
  • As built/As record drawings and documentation.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's in Architecture, Interior Architecture, or similar related field.
  • 1–2 years of experience in a technical design or drafting role (internship or full-time).
  • Knowledge of Revit, BIM coordination tools, AutoCAD, and other design software’s.

Desirable Skills

  • Communication skills verbal and visual, good problem-solving capabilities.
  • Portfolio demonstrating a range of design capabilities.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn in a fast-paced environment.
  • Good communicator with a keen interest in problem-solving.
  • Eagerness to learn technical standards and industry best practices.
  • Able to follow direction and adapt to project changes and feedback.
