The Role
The Junior Writer will be expected to conduct and write up interviews with leading political figures, from government ministers down, as well as writing long-form policy features and shorter news stories. Some commissioning may also be required.
Key tasks will include:
- Conducting long-form interviews with senior politicians and others.
- Writing news stories and features about politics and policy.
- Representing The House in the broadcast media and other required forums, helping to raise the magazine’s profile across Westminster and beyond.
- Creating journalism that has impact and is picked up by rivals.
- Using social media to tell stories and lead the online conversation.
- Assisting with administrative tasks, including uploading content, when needed.
- Carrying out any other duties reasonably requested by your direct line manager.
About you
You will have:
- A deep understanding of British politics at a local and national level.
- A capacity for independent, critical thinking.
- Excellent news judgement.
- An NCTJ qualification or significant evidence of shift work or work experience at media outlets.
- An understanding of how to use social media to gather news.
- A clear plan for the subject areas you wish to cover.
- A thorough understanding of media law, including copyright, defamation and privacy.
- The ability to work accurately under pressure.
- Exceptional multitasking skills.
- The ability to work effectively in a team or independently.
- Strong administration skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
- The ability to make decisions on live news coverage authoritatively and quickly.
- A flexible approach, the ability to think quickly, strong organisational skills and the ability to meet tight deadlines in a demanding environment.
- A confident and proactive approach, with a willingness to be hands-on.
- Excellent relationship-management and interpersonal skills.
- An open-minded, consultative approach.
- The ability to give and receive positive and constructive feedback.
- The ability to solve problems creatively.
- Excellent attention to detail.
