Kafka Admin Lead

Location: London, UK (Hybrid – 3 days onsite)
Contract: 6 Months

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Kafka Admin Lead to join a large enterprise data platform team. You will be responsible for administering, securing, monitoring, and optimizing enterprise Kafka environments, ensuring high availability, scalability, and operational excellence across mission-critical streaming platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer and manage Apache Kafka and Confluent Platform environments.
  • Provision, configure, and maintain Kafka clusters and Confluent components including Schema Registry, Kafka Connect, ksqlDB, Control Center, and REST Proxy.
  • Ensure high availability, disaster recovery, replication, and performance across Kafka environments.
  • Perform Kafka upgrades, patching, capacity planning, and cluster maintenance with minimal downtime.
  • Manage authentication, authorization, ACLs, RBAC, encryption, and platform security.
  • Configure and maintain Kafka topics, partitions, retention policies, and schema governance.
  • Monitor platform health using Prometheus, Grafana, JMX, and logging solutions.
  • Troubleshoot incidents, perform root cause analysis, and optimize broker and cluster performance.
  • Support Kafka Connect, distributed connectors, and streaming integrations.
  • Automate infrastructure using Terraform, Helm, Kubernetes, and GitOps practices.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure, networking, security, and application teams to maintain a secure and scalable streaming platform.

Required Skills

  • 12+ years of IT experience with at least 3 years of hands-on Kafka/Confluent administration in production.
  • Strong administration experience with Apache Kafka and Confluent Platform.
  • Experience with Kafka KRaft and ZooKeeper environments.
  • Strong knowledge of Kafka Connect, Schema Registry, ksqlDB, and Control Center.
  • Expertise in Kafka security including ACLs, RBAC, SASL, SCRAM, OAuth, mTLS, and TLS.
  • Experience with Kafka monitoring, alerting, performance tuning, and troubleshooting.
  • Hands-on experience with Linux, Kubernetes, Docker, and Terraform.
  • Experience with Prometheus, Grafana, JMX, and enterprise monitoring tools.
  • Knowledge of cloud networking including VPC/VNET, PrivateLink, DNS, and Load Balancers.
  • Experience working with Azure, AWS, or GCP environments.
