Career Beginnings
On leaving school, Paul began his career in the Construction Industry by taking on the role of Trainee Estimator with Kingham Construction. This role involved organizing tender packages for projects ranging in value from £100,000 to £5 million, analyzing and comparing returned enquiries, selecting companies/quotes to use in their tender, and conversing with sub-contractors regarding tender enquiries.
Broadening Knowledge
To broaden his knowledge of the industry, Paul spent a year working on a variety of sites, including new builds, refurbishments, car parks, and boundary walls. His responsibilities included setting out works, compiling site diaries and other site records (including concrete test cubes), and dealing with people both directly and over the telephone.

Training in the Buying Department
Following this experience, Paul moved to the buying department. Here, his focus was on obtaining a variety of materials for a wide scope of projects (new builds, refurbishments, and civil engineering projects). He was also responsible for hiring plant. Paul utilized his estimating experience when constructing tender packages and obtaining quotations for inclusion in company tender documentation.

Kingham Construction Ltd was a construction company based in High Wycombe, established in 1977. In 1988, they became part of the Hatfield Group.
Hatfield Construction Limited
Hatfield Construction Limited was founded in 1980 and developed into a major regional construction company operating from its headquarters in Hatfield, throughout North London and the Northern Home Counties. In 1988, the Hatfield Group decided to bring Kingham Construction into its organization to extend the group's area of operation into the West of London and the Thames Valley. Both companies operated successfully in the public and private sectors.

In April 1990, both companies became members of the Lilley Group and, in keeping with group policy, retained their own identity and a high degree of autonomy. At the same time, they gained the backing of a multinational organization in terms of overall corporate management and finance.
