On leaving school, Paul began his career in the Construction Industry by taking on the role of Trainee Estimator with Kingham Construction.
Role Description
This role involved:
- Organizing tender packages for projects ranging in value from £100,000 to £5 million.
- Analyzing and comparing returned enquiries.
- Selecting companies and quotes to use in their tender.
- Conversing with sub-contractors in relation to their tender enquiries.
Broadening Knowledge
To broaden his knowledge of the industry, Paul then spent a year working on a variety of sites, including:
- New builds
- Refurbishments
- Car parks
- Boundary walls
His responsibilities included:
- Setting out works
- Compiling site diaries and other site records (including concrete test cubes)
- Dealing with people (both directly and over the telephone)

Buying Department Training
Following this experience, Paul worked within the buying department. Here, the focus was on:
- Obtaining a variety of materials for a wide scope of projects (New builds, refurbishments, and Civil Engineering projects).
- Responsible for hiring plant.
- Utilizing his estimating experience when constructing tender packages and obtaining quotations for inclusion in company tender documentation.
Company Background
Kingham Construction Ltd was a construction company based in High Wycombe, established in 1977. In 1988, they became part of the Hatfield Group.
Hatfield Construction Limited was founded in 1980 and developed into a major regional construction company operating from its headquarters in Hatfield, throughout North London and the Northern Home Counties. In 1988, the Hatfield Group decided to bring Kingham Construction into its organization to extend the Group's area of operation into the West of London and the Thames Valley. Both companies operated successfully in the Public and Private sectors.

In April 1990, both companies became members of the Lilley Group, retaining their own identity and a high degree of autonomy while gaining the backing of a multi-national organization in terms of both overall corporate management and finance.
