πŸ“– WE’RE RECRUITING: KS4 ENGLISH LITERATURE TEACHER

High Achievers Tuition Centre (HATC)

Years 10–11

πŸ’· Pay: From Β£18 per hour, depending on experience.

πŸ’» Delivery: Primarily online, with selected in-centre sessions arranged in advance where appropriate to student need and programme requirements.

Develop perceptive readers. Build confident literary analysis. Prepare students to excel.

High Achievers Tuition Centre (HATC) is seeking an experienced and knowledgeable KS4 English Literature Teacher to teach students in Years 10 and 11.

This is a specialist GCSE English Literature role.

We are looking for a teacher with strong literary subject knowledge, secure understanding of GCSE English Literature assessment and the ability to help students move beyond basic comprehension towards thoughtful, well-supported and increasingly sophisticated literary analysis.

The successful candidate must be confident teaching complete literary texts, not simply isolated extracts, and helping students understand how writers use language, form, structure, character, theme and context to construct meaning.

🌟 WHY JOIN HATC?

We invest in our teachers as well as our students. You will join a close-knit, supportive professional community where high expectations are matched by practical support and opportunities to grow.

  • Paid planning, marking and student-feedback time: HATC recognises the work that happens outside the lesson itself, with appropriate time allocated and remunerated in line with our staff payment structure.
  • CPD and subject development: Ongoing professional development to strengthen literary subject knowledge, assessment expertise and teaching practice.
  • Departmental mentorship: A clear point of support through the departmental lead for curriculum, assessment, teaching and student matters.
  • Knowledge progression: Opportunities to deepen expertise across texts, examination boards and wider English provision.
  • Supportive community: A close-knit team where staff collaborate and are not expected to manage difficult situations in isolation.
  • Collaboration and growth: Shared curriculum/resource development and opportunities to take on additional teaching, mentoring or departmental responsibilities.

We believe teachers are most effective when they are well supported, continually developing and given the space to focus on high-quality teaching.

πŸ“š ABOUT THE ROLE

You will plan and deliver structured, academically rigorous GCSE English Literature tuition through a combination of one-to-one tuition and small-group sessions.

Students will be working across different levels of attainment, so you should be able to support learners who are struggling to access a text while also stretching higher-attaining students towards more conceptual, precise and perceptive responses.

Your teaching should develop secure knowledge and understanding across:

  • Shakespeare
  • Nineteenth-century novels
  • Modern prose and/or drama
  • Poetry anthology study and comparison
  • Unseen poetry
  • Character and theme
  • Language, form and structure
  • Writers’ methods and intentions
  • Relevant contextual understanding
  • Selection and analysis of textual evidence
  • Analytical paragraph and essay construction
  • Examination technique and timed writing
  • Effective retrieval and revision strategies

βœ… KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan and deliver high-quality GCSE English Literature tuition through one-to-one and small-group sessions.
  • Develop secure knowledge of prescribed literary texts, including characters, themes, relationships, language, form, structure and relevant context.
  • Teach increasingly sophisticated literary analysis, helping students explore writers’ methods, select effective textual evidence and develop supported interpretations.
  • Develop strong analytical writing and examination technique, including essay construction, poetry comparison, unseen poetry and timed responses.
  • Use assessment objectives, mark schemes, examiner materials and student work to identify gaps, plan intervention and provide appropriate challenge.
  • Monitor progress and support effective independent revision, including feedback, homework, retrieval practice and revision strategies.
  • Create an ambitious but supportive academic environment in which students are encouraged to think independently and justify their interpretations.
  • Maintain professional standards, including effective communication, use of HATC systems and adherence to safeguarding and student-welfare procedures.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer β€” it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet β€” that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

  • Strong literary subject knowledge and a secure understanding of GCSE English Literature assessment requirements.
  • Confidence teaching whole literary texts across the main GCSE Literature components.
  • The ability to teach students how to analyse language, form, structure and writers’ methods rather than simply identify techniques.

  • Confidence teaching both one-to-one and small-group sessions across differing levels of attainment.
  • Excellent written and spoken English, strong organisation and a professional approach to student progress.

Applicants should also be prepared to identify the specific texts and examination boards they have taught recently.

πŸ’‘ THE TEACHER WE ARE LOOKING FOR

You can take a student from:

β€œThis quotation shows that Macbeth is ambitious.”

towards a response that explores how Shakespeare constructs ambition, how particular language and dramatic choices shape meaning, and how an interpretation can be supported convincingly through the text.

You make the thinking behind excellent literary analysis visible.

You understand the difference between identifying a literary technique and actually analysing what the writer is doing and why it matters.

You do not rely on students memorising pre-written essays. Instead, you develop the textual knowledge, vocabulary, reasoning and confidence that allow them to construct strong responses independently.

You can help a student build a secure understanding of plot and character where necessary, while also stretching stronger learners towards alternative interpretations, conceptual arguments and increasingly precise analysis.

You are comfortable teaching Shakespeare, prose, drama, poetry and unseen texts, and you understand how the different components of GCSE English Literature require different approaches.

Above all, you share HATC’s commitment to helping our superstars become capable, confident and increasingly independent learners.

We are passionate about what we do and committed to providing a warm, compassionate environment where every student feels inspired to learn, grow and achieve.

Our students are at the heart of everything we do, and we hope you share that same commitment.

Applicants should be confident delivering high-quality online tuition.
