Lab and Workshop Technician

Location: Cambourne, Cambridgeshire
Contract: 12-months
Rate: £19.59 - £33.28 per hour

About the Role

As a Lab and Workshop Technician, you will play a hands-on role within the R&D laboratory, workshop and stores environment, supporting a multidisciplinary team of Product Designers, Mechanical Engineers and Electronic Engineers.

You will be involved in building and maintaining test setups and equipment, creating test jigs, 3D printing components, assembling prototypes and PCBs, carrying out testing and measurements, and documenting results.

Key Responsibilities

• Assemble and test electro-mechanical products and assemblies, including soldering wires and SMD components to PCBs.
• Carry out mechanical assembly, programming, calibration, testing and monitoring activities.
• Design and build test setups for system integration and functional testing.
• Design and develop test rigs and test jigs to support R&D activities.
• Produce 3D-printed jigs and components for testing and prototyping.
• Use laboratory measurement equipment and software tools to execute testing.
• Work closely with engineers on test-related project activities.
• Maintain, calibrate, service and inspect laboratory and workshop equipment.
• Support the efficient running and organisation of the R&D laboratory, workshop and stores.
• Assist with asset management, consumables, PPE, COSHH, EHS, cleanliness, waste management and operating procedures.
• Support the development and improvement of laboratory and testing capabilities.
• Purchase materials, fixings, consumables, tools and equipment as required.
• Collaborate with external test houses, suppliers and vendors.
• Document test findings and produce formal reports and presentations using Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Draw.io and Visio.
• Contribute to continuous improvement and new ways of working within the laboratory and workshop environment.
