Lab of the Future Project Manager | Contract | Macclesfield / Hybrid | Outside IR35 £600 per day
TechNET IT has partnered with one of the world’s largest global pharmaceutical and life sciences organisations, employing tens of thousands of people worldwide, to identify an experienced Lab of the Future Project Manager for a major laboratory transformation initiative in Macclesfield.
This is a highly autonomous, delivery-focused position taking ownership of the modernisation and retrofit of an existing brownfield laboratory environment — assessing what exists today, defining the future-state vision and roadmap, and then personally driving that roadmap through implementation.
The opportunity
You’ll operate at the intersection of laboratory transformation, technology and senior stakeholder management, working across internal scientific and business teams as well as external technology vendors.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Leading end-to-end delivery of a Lab of the Future / laboratory modernisation programme
- Conducting an as-is assessment of the existing laboratory environment, processes and technologies
- Gathering requirements from scientists, project stakeholders, influencers and budget owners
- Defining the future-state laboratory environment and transformation roadmap
- Taking ownership of implementing and delivering that roadmap
- Managing project budgets, forecasting and planning
- Evaluating laboratory technologies, platforms and potential vendors
- Coordinating suppliers through installation and implementation
- Building credibility and alignment with senior technical and business stakeholders
- Owning risks, issues and delivery challenges in an environment where there may not always be a defined escalation route

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What we’re looking for
We’re particularly interested in Project Managers who have previously walked into an existing laboratory environment, assessed the current state and successfully taken a modernisation programme from requirements and roadmap through to implementation.
