Lab Technician

Description

Bank contract, 15 hours per week, 52 weeks per year

Salary posted is full time equivalent

We are seeking a well organised, innovative and enthusiastic Science technician to contribute to the department’s aim to provide high-quality support for teaching, learning and assessment. Bath College has 2 fully developed laboratories that the successful candidate will be responsible for, along with a prep room where materials are stored.

The post holder will work with a variety of teachers to prepare across different programmes within the college, including Forensic Science and preparation of practicals on biology, chemistry and physics.

Key Responsibilities

  • To facilitate and deliver high standards of technical support for teaching and assessment.
  • To support teaching staff in the delivery of innovative practical laboratory sessions across a wide range of processes and applications as required through the preparation of material and resources.
  • To work with academic staff with setting up at the beginning of sessions and the collection of materials and equipment at the close of teaching sessions.
  • To support curriculum delivery through replicating the demonstrations from teaching staff, and the preparation of samples and test pieces.
  • To prepare material and process samples for students.
  • To manage, control and prepare the technical provision, including materials, in liaison with the teaching staff.
  • To provide technical support and practical advice to staff/ students in the preparation of lessons.
  • To support new students

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Experience of working in a prep room/ laboratory environment
  • Detailed knowledge of safe working practices in relation to handling and storage of chemicals
  • Detailed knowledge of safe working practices in relation to the handling and usage of hazardous equipment and tools
  • 3 GCSEs (Grade C or above) or equivalent inc. English Language and Maths
