What the role is

We are looking for an individual with a biomedical/ life sciences/ biology background and willing to work after hours schedule to be part of a committed team that supports the National Blood Program. You will provide critical after hours blood supply operations support to ensure adequate and timely provision of quality and safe blood and blood products to hospitals. You will be performing blood component processing and managing of blood inventory.

The appointee for this position will be hired in the Blood Supply Management Division, and he/she will work in a lab-based environment.

If appointed, you are expected to work permanent night shifts which will include public holidays and weekends as rostered. Currently, our officers on night shift work 12-hours shift, subject to change to an 8.5-hours shift. Work hours will make up a total of 42 hours per week.

What you will be working on

Blood inventory management

  • Responsible to maintain an adequate supply of blood and blood products to hospitals, and to provide laboratory technical support to the after hours blood supply operations according to the standards set in the Laboratory:
  • First-Expiry-First-Out blood product inventory movement for fulfilment of hospital orders.
  • Cold chain maintenance with proper packing material and configuration for blood transport.
  • Manage blood request orders and distribution in a timely manner and ensure the accurate provision of blood products according to approved requests.
  • Handle enquiries from stakeholders and assist to resolve issues timely with focus on service excellence and safety.
  • Build and maintain good working rapport and partnership with hospital blood bank laboratories.

Blood Component Processing

  • Responsible to perform a variety of laboratory technical procedures according to the standards set in the Laboratory:
  • Understand and maintain the quality standards of blood and blood products.
  • Proficient in basic blood and blood components preparation.
  • Proficient in specialised blood components preparation and modification procedures such as deglycerolization of blood, division of blood components etc.
  • Perform irradiation work for blood and blood components.
  • Perform quality control testing and blood grouping of specialised blood products.
  • Perform electronic labelling and tagging procedure for blood and blood products and ensure appropriate segregation and storage according to quality standards.

  • Responsible to perform general and administrative works according to the standards set in the Laboratory:
  • Adhere to biosafety practices and maintains a clean and well organised work environment.
  • Comply and maintain all applicable safety regulations and regulatory guidelines in the Laboratory.
  • Support the supervisors in maintenance of adequate stock supplies for smooth laboratory operations.
  • Check the performance of instruments and equipment in the Laboratory and to report any equipment that is not functioning properly.
  • Perform routine maintenance for equipment and instruments.

What we are looking for

  • Qualifications/background in Life Sciences or relevant fields
  • Working experience in a biomedical or healthcare laboratory with night shift setting is an advantage
  • Able to work night shift, weekends and public holidays
  • Confident and able to work independently
  • Able to work and communicate efficiently with stakeholders
  • Possess decision making capability for problem solving
  • Possess good analytical skills and work well under pressure
