Job Requirements

Team Lead Laboratory, Histology

Salary: £36,000 - £40,000

Location: Newmarket

Job Type: 6 month, Fixed Term Contact


Your role and responsibilities:

Antech is seeking an experienced Team Lead, Laboratory, Histology to provide operational, technical and people leadership across our main laboratory and Histology functions.

You will lead teams across both areas, working closely with Senior Bioveterinary Scientists on day-to-day laboratory operations and providing specialist technical and people leadership within Histology. You will act as the key escalation point for Histology matters while supporting team development, quality and continuous improvement.

This is a key role in ensuring the safe, efficient and high-quality delivery of veterinary diagnostic services.


Key responsibilities and attributes include:

Main Laboratory

  • Provide line management for Bioveterinary Scientists, working closely with Senior Bioveterinary Scientists who lead day-to-day technical and operational activities.
  • Support workload management, prioritisation, staffing and resolution of operational challenges.
  • Lead on performance and attendance management, coaching, development, recruitment and employee relations.
  • Ensure appropriate staffing, resources and training are in place to meet operational requirements.
  • Act as a management escalation point for people, resourcing and operational matters.
  • Drive improvements to laboratory processes and service delivery, ensuring staff remain trained, competent and compliant with SOPs, quality and health & safety requirements.

Histology

  • Provide people and technical leadership for the Histology team, overseeing day-to-day operations, workflow, prioritisation and staffing.
  • Act as the primary technical escalation point for Histology, providing expert guidance across grossing, embedding, microtomy and histochemical staining.
  • Ensure Histology processes meet required quality, turnaround time and customer expectations.
  • Coach and develop Histology Technicians, overseeing competency, training and technical development.
  • Support troubleshooting of equipment, technical and sample-related issues and ensure Histology SOPs and working practices are maintained.

Quality, Compliance & Service Delivery

  • Work closely with Pathologists, the Hub Laboratory, Customer Service and other internal teams to support effective clinical and laboratory service delivery.
  • Ensure compliance with SOPs, QA/QC requirements and the laboratory quality management system.
  • Lead or support investigations into quality incidents, non-conformances and operational issues, ensuring appropriate communication and escalation.
  • Support audit readiness, continuous improvement and high standards of laboratory health and safety.
  • Provide senior technical and operational support, including resolution of sample, testing and customer-related queries.
  • Oversee equipment, maintenance, consumables, inventory and resource management across the laboratory.

Work Experience

  • Experience working within a high-throughput veterinary diagnostic laboratory environment.
  • Understanding of laboratory workflow, turnaround times and operational priorities.
  • Strong practical knowledge of Histology, including grossing, embedding, microtomy and histochemical staining.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance and troubleshoot complex Histology issues.
  • Strong understanding of QA/QC, laboratory quality systems and SOP compliance.
  • Understanding of laboratory health & safety requirements and quality investigations.
  • Experience supporting laboratory staffing, training, competency and team development.
  • Ability to work effectively with Senior Bioveterinary Scientists, Pathologists, Hub Laboratory and wider laboratory teams.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving and escalation skills.
