I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

About You
You take pride in getting things right, paying close attention to detail and producing accurate, reliable results. Whether you’ve explored science before or are just starting out, you’re motivated to build real knowledge and develop a long-term career in a laboratory environment. You’re practical, enjoy hands-on work and are happy getting involved in physical tasks as part of your day-to-day role.
You’re someone who thrives in a structured setting but can also adapt when plans or priorities change. You like clarity, routine and knowing what good looks like. Following processes, working to standards and carefully recording your work feels satisfying rather than restrictive. You’re patient, focused and comfortable spending time on precise tasks, even when they’re repetitive, because you understand that quality and consistency matter. You also have good IT skills, particularly with Microsoft Office and Excel, and are willing to develop your understanding of technical drawings, equipment and testing procedures.
You take ownership of your learning, are proactive, open to feedback and approach your work with a methodical mindset.
