Laboratory Technician – Environmental (Flotta, Orkney)
About the Role
As a Laboratory Technician, you will support the delivery of high-quality environmental studies by performing laboratory activities in accordance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards. Based at our Environmental laboratory in Flotta, Orkney, your role will focus on ecotoxicology and environmental fate studies, while helping maintain laboratory equipment, facilities, and systems.
This position is perfect for someone who enjoys hands-on technical work, has a keen eye for detail, and is motivated to learn new skills. Collaborating closely with laboratory teams and environmental study projects, you will ensure the accuracy, reliability, and quality of scientific data.

Key Responsibilities
Essential Responsibilities
- Conduct laboratory work and technical tasks in compliance with GLP standards
- Ass**ist with ecotoxicology and environmental fate studies
- Maintain high standards in laboratory facilities, equipment, and systems
- Support calibration, maintenance, and upkeep of laboratory equipment
- Record and maintain laboratory data and documentation with accuracy
- Monitor stock levels for materials, consumables, and equipment
- Ensure a safe, clean, and organised working environment
- Comply with all HSE (Health, Safety, Environment) requirements, laboratory policies, and procedures
- Collaborate with teams to support the delivery of laboratory projects
Additional Responsibilities
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and method development
- Assist with fieldwork or environmental projects as required
- Support other departments based on operational needs
- Participate in additional training to further develop laboratory and technical skills
Qualifications & Skills
Essential Qualifications
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, accurate work
- Excellent organisational and time management skills
- Good communication and teamwork capabilities
- Ability to follow procedures in a regulated environment
- Positive attitude with a willingness to learn new technical skills
- Availability to work independently or as part of a team
Desired Qualifications
Previous laboratory experience (though not mandatory)
- Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards
- Experience in environmental, biological, chemical, or ecotoxicology roles
- Familiarity with laboratory equipment maintenance, calibration, or troubleshooting
- Degree or qualification in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a related field
- Previous experience supporting process improvements or method development
