Laser Source Project Engineer
Location: Bristol
Salary: Up to £53,000 depending on experience
Working model: Hybrid, 2-3 days per week onsite
Security Clearance: British Citizen or dual UK national with British citizenship
A leading defence technology organisation is looking for a Laser Source Project Engineer to work on a next-generation Laser Directed Energy Weapon programme.
This is a specialist opportunity to work on the development of an advanced high-energy laser weapon system, supporting the delivery, integration and testing of a critical laser subsystem alongside external technology partners and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
The role
You will work closely with the wider systems engineering team and external suppliers to manage the technical delivery of the laser source through development, acceptance, integration and test.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Managing technical and programme interfaces with external suppliers
- Supporting the delivery and acceptance of the laser source subsystem
- Coordinating activities through final assembly, integration and testing
- Working with engineering teams to integrate the laser source into the wider weapon system
- Developing and managing technical work packages and supplier deliverables
- Contributing to technical statements of work and defining clear delivery requirements
- Tracking technical progress, risks and dependencies across the work package
- Working closely with project managers to balance technical priorities and delivery objectives
- Engaging with internal and external stakeholders to resolve technical and programme challenges
- Supporting the continued development and evolution of the wider weapon system
- Contributing to design reviews, technical discussions and integration activities

You will be working across a multidisciplinary environment involving systems, electronics, optics, mechanical engineering and programme delivery, with the opportunity to contribute to a highly advanced defence technology programme.
What we're looking for
- Engineering experience within complex product, subsystem or systems development
- Experience working with external suppliers or third-party engineering partners
- Experience managing technical work packages, deliverables or supplier activities
- Ability to understand and manage technical interfaces between complex systems or subsystems
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
- A proactive approach to identifying and resolving technical and delivery issues
- Ability to work alongside project managers while taking ownership of technical activities
- Good understanding of engineering development, integration and test processes

Experience with laser systems, electro-optical equipment, opto-mechanical systems or other complex high-technology subsystems would be particularly useful, although strong experience delivering complex engineering equipment may also be relevant.

Security requirements
