I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What You Will Do
- Design and implement scalable backend applications and data integration pipelines to process unstructured documents, legal case systems, and SQL databases.
- Own technical direction and infrastructure (Azure, Fly.io), overseeing site reliability, disaster recovery, and the transition of data science code into robust production systems.
- Lead and mentor a growing team of 8+ engineers, establishing rigorous software development practices and driving the adoption of AI-enabled coding agents.
The ideal candidate
- Extensive professional experience in backend engineering with a track record of owning production systems, ideally using Python, FastAPI, and Azure.
- Proven leadership capability in a technical lead or mentoring capacity, with the ability to define backend architecture and set long-term technical standards.
- Strong communication skills for "forward-deployed" engineering, comfortable engaging directly with customers and internal stakeholders to scope integrations and resolve issues.
