Role Overview
The Lead BI Engineer is responsible for providing technical expertise in the design, development, and governance of business intelligence and analytical products that deliver trusted, actionable insight at scale.
Responsibilities

Technical Ownership of BI Solutions
Leads technical design and implementation within agreed architecture and design standards.

Design Authority & Best Practice
Contributes to the design authority for data modelling, visualisation, and BI patterns, contributing to standards and ensuring consistent, high-quality approaches across the team.

Stakeholder & Product Leadership
Works closely with product, performance, and business stakeholders to shape requirements, supports KPI definition and success criteria, and ensure BI products deliver meaningful outcomes.

Delivery Leadership & Risk Management
Supports reliable delivery by identifying technical risks, dependencies, and constraints early, and guiding teams to pragmatic, timely solutions.

Data Quality, Trust & Governance
Applies agreed validation and quality approaches and escalates data trust or security concerns through established governance routes.

Coaching & Capability Development
Supports BI Engineers and Junior Engineers, sharing expertise, reviewing work, and raising technical capability within the BI engineering team.

Continuous Improvement & Innovation
Drives ongoing improvement in BI tooling, patterns, and practices, identifying opportunities to simplify, automate, and enhance the BI estate.

Essential
- A degree level qualification (or equivalent practical experience) in Data Analytics, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
- Significant experience working in data or analytics roles within a complex organisation, delivering BI solutions across multiple business areas or workstreams.
- Proven, in-depth experience designing and delivering enterprise-scale business intelligence solutions, ideally using Power BI.
- Advanced analytical capability with strong experience in data visualisation, storytelling, and UX design for insight delivery.
- Demonstrated experience producing executive-level insight, including shaping narrative, defining KPIs, and supporting strategic decision-making.
- Advanced proficiency in analytics and visualisation tools (e.g. Power BI, advanced Excel; Tableau optional).
- Extensive practical experience designing dimensional data models, applying Kimball methodologies, and creating reusable semantic layers.
- Strong SQL expertise, including writing and reviewing complex queries for data extraction, validation, and transformation.
- Proven experience ensuring data quality, trust, and governance, including validation approaches, testing strategies, and peer review.
- Experience acting as technical lead or design authority, reviewing others’ work and setting best-practice patterns for BI delivery.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with experience shaping requirements, challenging assumptions, and translating business needs into scalable BI products.
- Experience supporting reliable delivery within an Agile-oriented or hybrid delivery environment, including managing technical risks and dependencies.
- Experience coaching, mentoring, or guiding BI Engineers and Junior BI Engineers, or equivalent roles, to raise overall team capability.
- Experience working closely with BI Managers, senior stakeholders, or Delivery Leads to shape roadmaps, priorities, and delivery approaches.
- Experience monitoring BI usage and performance metrics and driving product iteration based on adoption and feedback.
- Experience with Power BI Service administration and governance, including workspace strategies, dataset endorsement, access models, and deployment pipelines.
- Experience designing or contributing to BI standards, including modelling conventions, visualisation frameworks, or delivery patterns.

Desirable
- Advanced experience writing and optimising complex SQL (CTEs, window functions, performance tuning).
- Experience with automation or orchestration tools (e.g. Power Automate) to support BI delivery, quality, or operational efficiency.
- Exposure to modern cloud data platforms (e.g. Azure data services, Databricks, Synapse, Fabric) and their use in analytics architectures.
- Exposure to designing data models that are optimised for Generative AI consumption to support natural language querying and prompt driven insight generation.

Travel Requirements
UK wide travel is required as needed to support business activities.

Salary
- Minimum Salary: £45,000.00
- Maximum Salary: £58,625.00
