Role Summary
As a Lead Controls and Automation Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering control system projects primarily for Marine, Offshore, and Naval applications. This technical role entails working with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to design, implement, and test our Controls & Automation Systems solutions to meet both customer and marine classification society requirements.

- Providing a technical interface to customers, classification societies, and suppliers.
- Producing design, installation, and test documentation; maintaining this documentation throughout the project cycle.
- Working with the Drawing Office to produce equipment drawings, electrical wiring diagrams, cable interconnection drawings, and interface schedules.
- Performing the functional design of HMI, PLC Architecture, Networks, and Communications Interfaces using standard hardware and software components.

- Planning and progressing design and test activities to meet the required delivery dates.
- Managing change during the project lifecycle using appropriate change management processes.
- Performing factory testing of control systems leading to a formal Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) with customer and classification society.
- Supporting the commissioning and sea-trials phase of the project; normally from the office but with the possibility of visiting the vessel.
- Providing technical advice and assistance to the sales, commissioning, and service teams.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
