Lead Data Engineer

London | 4 Days Per Week in Office
Up to £95,000 + Benefits

This is an outstanding opportunity for a Lead Data Engineer to take ownership of a growing data engineering function within an innovative AI-driven software business. You'll combine hands-on technical leadership with team management, helping shape engineering standards, processes, and architecture while working on data and AI solutions that have a direct commercial impact.

The Role

  • Lead and develop the Data Engineering function, defining best practices, standards, and delivery processes.
  • Manage, mentor, and support a team of Data Engineers, fostering technical excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Design and build scalable ETL and ELT pipelines across operational, analytical, and AI-driven workloads.
  • Take ownership of complex data engineering projects, remaining hands-on with critical development work.
  • Define and enhance data models that support analytics, machine learning, and customer insight initiatives.
  • Drive CI/CD adoption, deployment governance, and engineering automation.
  • Collaborate closely with Product, Data Science, and wider technology teams to deliver high-quality solutions.
  • Introduce and optimise AI-powered engineering workflows to improve productivity, quality, and efficiency.
  • Implement monitoring, governance, and data quality frameworks to ensure reliable delivery.

  • Strong commercial experience in Data Engineering within cloud-based environments.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, and developing Data Engineering teams.
  • Advanced SQL and Python expertise for data transformation, orchestration, and pipeline development.
  • Strong understanding of data modelling, including dimensional and analytical data structures.
  • Experience designing and maintaining scalable data architectures.
  • Knowledge of cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.
  • Experience with Git-based development and CI/CD practices.
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams across engineering, product, and data functions.
  • Strong communication skills and a focus on engineering quality, governance, and best practice.
