About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Data Engineer or Architect to join our dynamic team. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in assisting public sector organizations to become data-driven entities by designing and implementing robust data platforms. You will work closely with various government departments to define data strategies, develop scalable data pipelines, and establish best practices for data storage and processing. Your expertise will help break down data silos, enabling teams to access and utilize data effectively, ultimately supporting better decision-making and service delivery. As a leader, you will also contribute to our talent growth by participating in recruitment efforts and taking on line management responsibilities. This role offers an exciting opportunity to influence data architecture at a national level while working on impactful projects that serve the public good.

  • Proficiency in version control systems such as Git, including experience with Github Actions and branching strategies.
  • Extensive experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and deploying infrastructure across multiple environments.
  • Knowledge of handling and transforming various data formats (JSON, CSV, etc.) using tools like Apache Spark, Databricks, or Hadoop.
  • Understanding of modern data architecture concepts such as Data Warehouses, Data Lakes, and Data Meshes.
  • Ability to create and manage data pipelines within cloud environments, incorporating error handling and resilience.
  • Experience in developing reusable libraries to promote consistency across data pipelines.
  • Capability to document and present comprehensive end-to-end system diagrams using tools like UML or C4.
  • Enthusiasm for continuous learning, self-development, and staying current with emerging data technologies.
  • Experience working within Agile frameworks such as Scrum, XP, or Kanban.
  • Strong understanding of DevOps practices, including deployment, monitoring, and security in cloud-based data systems.
  • Proven ability to design scalable data transformation processes for both batch and streaming data use cases.
  • Knowledge of software principles like SOLID, DRY, and TDD, and how to apply them practically.
  • Commercial awareness to grow accounts organically through stakeholder engagement and project delivery.
  • Experience in implementing testing strategies to enhance system resilience, including data quality checks and vulnerability assessments.
  • Ability to advise on DataOps tools for orchestration, integration, and analytics.

Responsibilities

  • Define, shape, and continuously improve data strategies tailored for central and local government agencies.
  • Assist teams in understanding the value of their data and enable them to make data-driven decisions.
  • Establish yourself as a trusted advisor on data-driven approaches, leveraging cloud services such as AWS, Azure, and GCP.
  • Lead the design and implementation of scalable, secure, and efficient data pipelines and storage solutions.
  • Guide teams in adopting best practices for data architecture, including Data Warehouses, Data Lakes, and Data Meshes.
  • Contribute to recruitment efforts by mentoring junior engineers and participating in line management responsibilities.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement by sharing knowledge, conducting code reviews, and facilitating team learning sessions.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
  • Implement DevOps practices to automate deployment, monitoring, and maintenance of data systems.
  • Ensure data security, compliance, and privacy standards are adhered to across all projects.
  • Develop comprehensive documentation and diagrams to communicate system architecture and data flows effectively.
  • Identify opportunities for process automation and efficiency improvements within data pipelines and workflows.
