Lead Data Engineer

Remote, UK
Up to £130,000 + Benefits

This is an opportunity to join a fast-growing digital business where data is central to product innovation, customer experience, and strategic decision-making. As a Lead Data Engineer, you'll take ownership of the technical direction of the data platform, helping scale a modern cloud-based ecosystem while mentoring engineers and driving best practice across the function.

Working within a highly collaborative engineering environment, you'll have the opportunity to influence architecture, shape the future of the data platform, and solve complex data challenges at scale.

They are a technology-driven organisation operating within the online gaming and betting space, serving a rapidly growing customer base through a modern digital platform.

Data plays a critical role across the business, supporting everything from product development and customer insights to operational performance and commercial decision-making. Following continued growth, they are investing heavily in their data capabilities and are looking for a Lead Data Engineer to help drive the next phase of that journey.

The Role

As Lead Data Engineer, you will be responsible for setting the technical direction of the data engineering function while remaining hands-on with architecture and development.

You will:

  • Own the technical strategy and evolution of the data platform
  • Design and scale robust data pipelines, data models, and core platform architecture
  • Lead the development of reliable, high-performance data solutions that support analytics and business intelligence
  • Champion engineering best practices across testing, monitoring, automation, and deployment
  • Drive improvements in scalability, reliability, performance, and data quality
  • Mentor and support Data Engineers through coaching, code reviews, and technical leadership
  • Collaborate closely with senior stakeholders to align data initiatives with business objectives
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and introduce improvements across the data stack
  • Manage technical debt and ensure long-term platform sustainability
  • Act as a key voice in architectural and technology decisions across the wider engineering organisation

Your Skills & Experience

  • Strong commercial experience designing and scaling modern data platforms
  • Advanced Python and SQL expertise
  • Deep understanding of data architecture, data modelling, and data warehousing principles
  • Hands-on experience with orchestration tools such as Dagster, Airflow, or Prefect
  • Strong experience using dbt and modern ELT practices
  • Experience building cloud-native data solutions within AWS environments
  • Knowledge of technologies such as Snowflake, Apache Iceberg, Docker, Terraform, and related tooling
  • Strong understanding of software engineering principles, CI/CD, testing, and observability
  • Experience mentoring engineers and driving technical standards across teams
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
