Lead Design Engineer
A heritage floor care brand is rebuilding its product development function from a blank sheet, and you would help lead it. This Lead Design Engineer, Advanced Development role at Vax is based in Droitwich, Worcestershire, four days a week on site, with up to 10% bonus and real ownership of concept and prototype work for dry products from day one.
Scope of the Role
As a Lead Design Engineer in Vax's new Advanced Development team, you will lead concept generation for dry products, from vacuums and cordless vacs to air movement, filtration, motor and battery systems. You will build working demonstrators fast, mentor junior engineers, and set the technical direction for what Vax builds next.
- Drive concept generation and rapid prototyping for dry products, hands on from idea to demonstrator.
- Mentor and develop junior Advanced Development engineers as the team grows.
- Define product and technology architectures and solve the hardest technical problems.
- Work with external suppliers to bring concepts to life.
- Present trade-offs, risk, and technical summaries to senior stakeholders across the business.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
