Lead Design Engineer – Electronic Security Systems (ESS)

Critec Group is looking for an experienced Lead Design Engineer – Electronic Security Systems (ESS) to join our team on a contract basis in the UK.

This is an opportunity to take ownership of a defined ESS workstream from inception through to completion, leading the design lifecycle and providing technical assurance across complex security projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Report to the Design Lead / Manager.
  • Responsible for a defined ESS workstream with ownership of the full lifecycle of the project or programme.
  • Actively participate in supporting other members of the team.
  • Utilise and maintain reports, documents, and records using document management systems.
  • Build strong relationships with client stakeholders and Tier 1 contractors throughout the programme.
  • Manage the activity plan by arranging meetings and preparing reports, briefs, and documentation as required for Site Surveys, Project Set-up, Security Risk Assessments, Stage Gate Meetings, and Stakeholder Engagement.
  • Lead the design and specification of Electronic Security Systems including CCTV, Access Control (ACS), Intruder Detection (IDS), and Perimeter Intrusion Detection Systems (PIDS).
  • Prepare and deliver Technical Governance reports and meetings with all stakeholders.
  • Draft, review, and issue CAD drawings in coordination with the CAD design team.
  • Will work as part of the PD or the Appointed Designer.
  • Attend weekly progress meetings including site visits and maintain interfaces between suppliers, contractors, and client teams.
  • Manage design change processes including Technical Query (TQ), waiver production, and general design change assistance.
  • Undertake review of all aspects of design around security, electrical, technical, and asset standard compliance.
  • Liaison with framework contractor regarding the production and review of all elements of the contractor's detailed design.
  • Liaise with relevant expertise for electrical, civils, and structural design review and approvals.
  • RAG reviews, design programme monitoring, and installation tracker coordination.
  • Create, Review & Respond to Early Warning Notices (EWNs) as required.
  • Input into design trackers, risk registers, and activity/progress reports.
  • Maintenance of design registers.
  • Provide de-risking input with contractors.
  • Attendance at de-risking and compliance assessment surveys.
  • Review documents authored by support engineers as part of the project governance process.
  • Review design and general documents submitted by contractors as part of the project governance process.
  • Develop and issue revisions to project briefs.
  • Update project assurance documentation to reflect design changes.
  • Undertake de-risking and design optioneering activities.
  • Provide cost modelling and Electronic Security Systems (ESS) support.
  • Identify and develop engineering and cost efficiencies.
  • Support planning, environmental, and customer impact assessment activities as required.
  • Support and deputise for the Design Lead/Manager as required.
  • Identify engineering and cost efficiencies based on lessons learnt from previous upgrade programmes.
  • Ensure compliance with industry, statutory, client technical, and electrical standards, as well as internal and external governance processes.
  • Collate and review construction materials (e.g. as-built drawings, service drawings, certification, and registers) required for technical design packs and O&M manuals.
  • Compile documents to meet client process gateways and project stage gate requirements.
  • Collate information and assist the Design Manager with the production of O&M manuals.
  • Act as design ‘Checker’ as part of the ‘Check, Review and Authorise’ governance process.
  • Support Design Assurance reviews, in line with applicable technical standards, for any third-party designs submitted as part of the overall security system design.
  • Implement change controls during the design review process and manage amendments (red-lining) to designs during the construction phase of the project.
  • Undertake assurance reviews of security system installations to ensure compliance with approved designs and applicable technical standards.
