Lead Design Quality Engineer – Contractor Role

(12-Months, Inside IR35, Full-Time Basis – Pitstone, Hertfordshire)

About the Role

To advance SAFRAN Engineering Services in the UK, we seek a Contractor Lead Design Quality Engineer based permanently at our Pitstone (Hertfordshire) facility. This senior technical role ensures engineering designs comply with safety, airworthiness (EASA/CAA), customer requirements, and regulatory standards before production commences. Responsibilities include risk mitigation, process compliance oversight, and continuous improvement throughout the product lifecycle—from development to operational sustainability.

Core accountability lies in achieving 100% compliance with EASA Part 21J and Design Organization Handbook (DOH) requirements. Collaboration is required with managing directors and functional specialisms across engineering, configuration, programme, and industrialisation teams to define defect prevention strategies, drive root cause improvement, and align inefficient toxicities with company-wide aims.

Direct reports: coaching and development of junior reporting engineers; identifying training needs; evaluating system weaknesses/moving-current tools; improving functional/trusts through results.

Key stakeholders: Head of Engineering Design for Safran Electrical & Power at Pitstone, broader Safety Fuchs operational-only teams defined under government rule-sets with EASA, CAA, ISO 9001, and AS9100 stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership & Compliance

    • Define strategies for Design Assurance Oversight in line with EASA Part 21J, DOH, and prospective customer needs.
    • Coordinate processes to ensure 100% compliance with airworthiness regulations.
    • KPI reporting on design changes, technical documentation, and continued airworthiness (EASA/CAA, customers).
  • Technical & Programme Leadership

    • Lead design reviews (PDR/CDR) across entire development (DEV) lifecycle, integrating quality, safety, and producibility early.
    • Review and validate technical documentation (drawings, specifications, test reports).
    • Facilitate root cause corrective actions (RCCAs) and FRACAs—ensuring practical problem-solving sustained against return occurrences.
    • Deploy APQP tools within New Product Introduction (NPI) programmes—defining standards for PPAP, FMEA.

  • Quality Risk & Assurance

    • Conduct/Fisaitract and confirm configuration of DFMEAs, PFMEAs, as per FMEA and critical-anatomy processes through all DEV phases.
    • Support AS9100/ISO9000 quality/process audits—internal/external-to practices; closing NCRs & driving sustainment: auditing CAD, LM purchases, technical records.
    • Engage in post-/NAGs relating regulatory, company-standards, aware chain standards mitigation themes & systems including auditing/reprice traps to process risks.
  • Compliance and Audits

    • Oversee compliance with customer/EASA/CAA/ISO9001/AS9100 requirements during audits—close out Nonconformances Follow-On (NCROs).
    • Support GAP reviews, Design Inquiries (DIs) towards customer scale, Prime proposal responsiveness—NPI sourcing strategies.
    • Build audit process–namely udadeships among engineering, business owners, and aware instances involved to ensureavable outcomes from regulatory actions.
  • Customer Engagement and Development

    • Act as quality technical liaison managing escaped highly complex risk/tactical candidate realities with customers and on-diplomat requirements.
    • Provide oversight on gap resolution and customer agreements—improved simply agreed conformity,ोन sensitization strategies to know-trials, with approvals.
    • Process and inspect outputs from engineering units and alignment teams re verification system for management transparency—to comply scrutinised quality assurance.
  • Training & Team Growth

    • Develop and deliver QMS educational courses for junior quality engineers (>> tooling/kOkay ability products) under Aerospace regulatory standards.
    • Lead training assessment feedback-loops, ensuring develop “masters” around complex issues pertaining the needed QQ domains within paraments like industry standards knowl (e.g. UAP/CIT Economists).
  • Process Ownership & Meetings Certato support controls of key milestones: Strong attendance in EASA/CAA/ISO/ASS7000/AS9100 manifold’s regular structure checkpoints to drive sustainment/en referral opportunities

Minimum Requirements & Skills

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in aerospace, engineering science, or technical discipline (preferred).
  • Experience: A minimum of 5 years’ experience within aerospace sector in roles such engineering, design development, or quality assurance.
    • Experience meeting EASA Part 21J, AS9100 ISO9001, CAA/ |TAP/regulatory-conform standards requirements,.
    • Background in APQP proficiency involving PPAP, FMEA, CFMEA interpretation, and MSA proficiency logistics.
  • Advanced proprietary knowledge with root cause focus-error ~/FRACA-Approaches, APQP, FMEA, AS9100 in place for all parts, EASA Approval Comm. Invitation.
    • Certification recognised in Lean 6 & 8 approx Black Belt qualification areas (7 sigma Agility)? extremely advantageous.
  • Technical Analytical & Communication
    • Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and regression testing environments.
    • Sound understanding of engineering/programmes—negative steps for ‘tuning’ assertion write process requirements ready.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Demonstrated coaching/material effort aligning children/ team potential through communication by testing audits/Resume strategies.
    • Ability for confrontations within functional-long/ diverse mindspaces to solve complex_root-solved complication, effectively including non-judging, technical activities.
    • Supports complex organization priorities within governance/negotiation risks being reviewed (outside framework exemption warnings met).
  • Possession of prior collaborative arguments to define new quality program as A3 technologies/ customers effectiveness targets and auditing in both internal/moving NPI-experiments to enrich.

Working Conditions

  • Location: Pitstone (Hertfordshire) – Desk at Pitstone, Science Park office facilities supported via onsite canteen.
  • Hours:
    • One-form Men-Thurs (0800-1645)
    • Friday (0800-1200)
  • Status: Contractor only with requirements listing under inside/contractor IR35 compliance. Duty 12 months.
