Lead Developer / Application Developer – Java & Web Technologies
Location: London, UK
Working Arrangement: Hybrid – 2 days onsite per week
Contract: Inside IR35
Residency: Minimum 5 years continuous UK residency
Security Clearance: BPSS Mandatory
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Lead Developer / Application Developer – Java & Web Technologies to support a major DWP application refactoring and migration programme.
The successful candidate will lead development activities required to refactor key applications, working closely with IBM, DWP client teams and the wider programme team. The role will involve designing, developing, updating and assuring application components as part of a successful migration to AWS.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead application development activities for the refactoring of key DWP applications.
- Design, develop and assure key application components.
- Develop and enhance Java-based applications as part of an AWS migration.
- Work closely with IBM and client teams to deliver application changes.
- Contribute to technical design and overall implementation.
- Support application modernisation and cloud migration activities.
- Review existing application components and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Ensure development work meets required technical, security and quality standards.
- Provide technical guidance and support to other developers.
- Troubleshoot and resolve application development and integration issues.
- Contribute to technical documentation and development assurance.
- Collaborate with architects, developers, testers and programme stakeholders.

- Strong experience as a Java Developer, Application Developer or Lead Developer.
- Proven experience developing Java applications being migrated to AWS.
- Strong Java development experience in enterprise environments.
- Experience with application refactoring, modernisation or migration.
- Strong understanding of Java and Web Technologies.
- Experience working within large-scale technical/programme teams.
- Strong problem-solving and technical communication skills.
Desirable Experience
- Experience working on UK Government / DWP programmes.
- Experience with legacy application refactoring.
- Strong AWS / cloud migration experience.
- Experience in large-scale transformation programmes.
- Experience providing technical leadership or mentoring.
- Experience in public-sector or regulated environments.
