Job Description

ALTEN UK is seeking an experienced Lead Electrical Engineer to join our growing team in Derby | Manchester | Warrington, supporting key projects within the Nuclear Energy sector. This is an exciting opportunity for a senior engineer looking to take on technical leadership across the full lifecycle of major electrical infrastructure and power system projects.

As Lead Electrical Engineer, you will take ownership of the electrical engineering scope on complex projects within the nuclear and safety-critical industries, leading a team of engineers while acting as the technical authority for electrical design, grid interface, and power system integration matters.

Your main responsibilities will be:

Technical Leadership

  • Lead and manage a team of electrical engineers across multiple concurrent projects
  • Act as the technical authority for electrical design decisions, providing mentorship and technical direction to junior and mid-level engineers
  • Own the electrical engineering deliverables schedule, ensuring quality, cost, and programme targets are met
  • Represent the electrical discipline in project reviews, client meetings, and design authority boards

Electrical System Design & Grid Integration

  • Lead the design and specification of electrical power systems, including generation, transmission, and distribution interfaces
  • Direct the analysis and integration of cross-border and international grid interconnections, with particular focus on Eastern European grid links
  • Oversee the development of:
    • Single line diagrams and electrical architecture
    • Protection and control philosophy
    • Grid code compliance studies and interconnection agreements
    • Load flow, fault level, and stability studies
  • Maintain end-to-end traceability between system requirements, detailed electrical designs, and vendor deliverables
  • Verify designs for completeness, consistency, and compliance with applicable national and international standards

Design Delivery

  • Produce and review high-quality engineering design packages for software, hardware, and construction teams
  • Review vendor technical submissions, design documentation, and engineering solutions
  • Participate in and chair technical reviews, hazard assessments, and design verification activities
  • Support integration activities and ensure alignment between electrical architecture and operational requirements

Lifecycle & Compliance

  • Provide technical expertise throughout the design lifecycle, from concept through to commissioning
  • Support development of verification and validation strategies
  • Contribute to and oversee Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), integration testing, and system validation activities
  • Ensure compliance with:
    • Nuclear industry standards
    • Functional safety requirements
    • Grid code and interconnection requirements
    • Internal engineering governance processes

  • Comfortable coordinating complex supplier and client relationships.
  • Detail-oriented and confident reviewing technical documentation.
  • Proactive and organised, with strong stakeholder engagement skills.
  • A systems thinker able to manage scope, risks, and engineering change.

Qualifications

Experience, skills and qualifications required:

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent military experience
  • Demonstrable experience leading electrical engineering teams or workstreams
  • Significant electrical engineering experience within power systems or nuclear/energy sectors
  • Strong experience in electrical engineering design and delivery, ideally within nuclear, energy, or other safety-critical industries
  • Proven leadership experience, including line management or technical leadership of engineering teams
  • Experience with international grid interconnections; experience with Eastern European grid links is strongly preferred, ideally including electrical/nuclear power plant experience gained in former Soviet Union countries
  • Solid understanding of power systems, protection philosophy, and grid code compliance
  • Knowledge of system lifecycle activities including V&V, commissioning, and maintenance
  • Familiarity with relevant industry standards (e.g. IEC 61508, IEC 61513, IEC 61226, or equivalent national/international grid codes)
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a structured, logical approach
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the confidence to lead technical discussions at project and client level

  • Experience working on large infrastructure projects with high-level safety requirements
  • Chartered Engineer status (or working towards)
