Overview
Overview is looking for an experienced Lead Electronics Engineer to join our hardware engineering team at our head office in Woking, Surrey.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a hands-on electronics leader to play a pivotal role in the delivery of innovative new product development projects. You’ll lead and grow our electronics engineering capability, working across the full product lifecycle — from requirements capture and architecture definition through to design, verification, production test planning and customer support. In this role, you’ll lead technical decision-making, support business-critical projects, work closely with internal and external stakeholders, and help drive continuous improvement across engineering processes, tools and delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership of the electronic engineering team. Ensuring the capability, capacity, process and tools in these groups meet the business needs.
- Capture of stakeholder requirements from internal and external customers for new products, variants or problem spaces.
- Formation, management and ownership of electronics system/subsystem:
- Definition and documentation of electronic architectures and trade off studies and obtaining agreement to these with the relevant stakeholders
- Comprehensive documentation of the specifications, compliance and verification processes ensuring designs are innovative, cost effective, fit for purpose and reliable.
- Effective use of CAD design tools (Altium, LTSpice, CAD trace calculators, Thermal calculation).
- Effective process selection, e.g. Soldering: reflow/vapor/wave, SMD/through hole, plating, via technology, testability, layer stack, thermal dissipation and conduction etc.
- Operational and legal compliance
- Developing validation test plans that fully test and prove pre-production hardware to guarantee the produced design meets the specifications.
- Developing production test plans, including equipment allocation, test jig design to ensure repeatability and maximise production yields.
- Support the Head of Hardware Engineering in driving the efficient use, and continuous improvement, of the Engineering and New Product Development business processes and tools.
- Interface directly with customers (internal and external) for both new product development as well as product support.
- Project and commercial management of outsourced partners including selection, preparation of requirements, Statements of Work, preparation of sub-contract agreements and performance management
- Work with the other functional leaders to ensure that new project proposals are accurately assessed in terms of project approach, deliverables, timescale, budget and resource requirements
- Supervising and conducting of test work both in-house and at external EMC test houses.
- Lead root cause analysis of production & design problems to a successful conclusion.
- Execution of research into new technologies for continuous improvement of performance and cost.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
