Lead Engineer (Backend)
Solihull, West Midlands - Hybrid
£100 – 115k + Bonus + Excellent Benefits
The Opportunity
HW Solutions are supporting one of the UK's fastest-growing brands in the search for a Lead Engineer to join its Backend Engineering function. This is a genuine technical leadership role where you'll remain hands-on with engineering while influencing architecture, coaching engineers and helping shape the evolution of a modern cloud platform that supports millions of customers globally.
Unlike many Lead Engineer positions, this isn't about managing people. Instead, you'll be the technical leader within multiple engineering squads, working alongside Engineering Managers to drive engineering quality, architectural decisions and best practice across the platform.

What You'll Be Doing
- Remain hands-on with coding while providing technical leadership
- Design and evolve scalable backend services and APIs
- Drive architectural decisions across existing business-critical platforms
- Optimise existing systems rather than constantly building greenfield solutions
- Coach and mentor Senior and Mid-Level Engineers
- Improve engineering standards, code quality and testing practices
- Work closely with Engineering Managers on technical direction
- Support high-volume, high-traffic systems that experience significant demand spikes
- Help evolve an event-driven architecture running within AWS
Essential Experience
- Strong commercial experience building backend applications using Golang, or another strongly typed language such as Java, Kotlin or C#
- Experience developing cloud-native applications within AWS (or another major cloud platform such as Azure or GCP)
- Strong understanding of Event-Driven Architecture and asynchronous messaging patterns
- Experience designing, building and maintaining RESTful APIs
- Experience building highly scalable, high-availability systems capable of handling significant traffic spikes
- Strong understanding of software architecture and engineering best practices
- Experience mentoring and coaching engineers through technical leadership rather than line management
- Passion for clean, maintainable, well-tested code
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence technical direction

This is a hybrid / remote position with onsite being in Solihull
