Lead Engineer - HVDC - UK

The Role

As HVDC Lead Engineer, you will take ownership of the design, development, and delivery of HVDC systems from concept to commissioning. You will work closely with cross-functional teams and clients, ensuring technical excellence, safety compliance, and project success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering design and integration of HVDC converter stations and associated equipment.
  • Define system architecture and technical specifications.
  • Oversee performance studies including load flow, transient stability, and fault analysis.
  • Interface with OEMs, utilities, and stakeholders to align technical requirements.
  • Provide expert guidance during installation, testing, and commissioning.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards (e.g., IEC, CIGRÉ, IEEE).
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to capability building within the team.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in HVDC engineering or transmission systems.
  • Deep understanding of HVDC technologies (LCC, VSC), protection schemes, and control systems.
  • Strong project leadership and stakeholder management skills.
  • Proficient in simulation tools (e.g., PSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink, PSS®E).
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience in offshore or renewable HVDC applications.
  • Knowledge of hybrid AC/DC grid integration.
  • Familiarity with international project delivery models (EPC, FEED, turnkey).
