Job Description
Just imagine helping millions more shoppers discover the right product while a platform handles 150% more traffic at a fraction of the cost. Then make it real.
About the role
As our Lead Software Engineer, you'll help shape the future of the LEGO Group's digital shopper experience across LEGO.com, mobile apps, and the foundations that support them. This is a hands-on technical leadership role where you'll spend most of your time contributing directly or indirectly to delivery, guiding architecture, and helping teams make sound technical decisions. You'll bring a broad systems view while staying close to the code, working across product teams that serve shopper and retail experiences at significant scale.
Required Qualifications
- Built and operated production software in JavaScript and TypeScript at scale.
- Led architectural decisions for large public-facing digital products, documenting trade-offs and long-term outcomes.
- Delivered cloud-native services on AWS, Azure, or GCP, including distributed or microservice-based systems.
- Shaped technical direction across multiple teams while remaining an active contributor to software delivery.
- Implemented GraphQL-powered applications or services in production environments.
- Improved platform scalability, performance, or operational cost through measurable engineering changes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Developed and supported modern React, Next.js, React Native, or Expo applications.
- Designed and operated event-driven architectures in production.
- Managed CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure as code using tools such as GitHub Actions, Terraform, or CDK.
- Scaled consumer commerce platforms with significant traffic growth and availability requirements.
What you'll build
- Technical direction for product areas across LEGO digital shopper experiences.
- Architectural improvements that support continued traffic growth while maintaining efficiency and reliability.
- Solutions that improve product discoverability and support evolving European compliance requirements.
- Engineering standards covering testing, security, observability, accessibility, and performance.
- Strong technical partnerships with product managers and digital designers from discovery through delivery.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

If you've worked in a role where you've scaled public-facing platforms, balanced technical and business outcomes, and lived with the long-term impact of your architectural decisions, you'll feel at home here. What matters most is bringing systems thinking, practical judgement, and a track record of turning complex challenges into sustainable solutions.
Life on the team
You'll join Shopper Technology, a collaborative engineering environment focused on creating great digital experiences for shoppers. Lead Engineers act as visible technical leaders within their teams, helping others grow while contributing meaningful technical work themselves. We work in a hybrid rhythm, spending three days together in the office, and value people who can zoom into the detail when needed while keeping sight of the bigger picture.
What success looks like
Success means helping teams evolve the foundations behind LEGO shopper experiences through steady, incremental improvements that scale. You'll work closely with product teams, engineers, designers, and retail-focused stakeholders as traffic continues to grow and new platform capabilities are introduced. You'll be recognised for making good architectural calls, improving efficiency, and helping teams deliver outcomes that create value beyond their own products.
Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis. However, please note we do amend or withdraw our jobs and reserve the right to do so at any time, including prior to any advertised closing date. So, if you're interested in this role we encourage you to apply as soon as possible.
