Where will you be working?
At M Group Energy, we’re enabling the energy essential to support our lives.
We provide an end-to-end service, delivering solutions in electricity transmission, distribution, renewable energy, EV, metering and home decarbonisation.
This role will be within our Transmission & Renewables team. We design, build and commission substations at voltages up to and including 400kV. Our teams construct and maintain transmission lines and substations, ensuring the efficient and reliable delivery of electricity.
What will you be doing?
The Lead Estimator is responsible for leading the preparation, coordination and submission of competitive and commercially robust estimates for high-voltage transmission projects within the UK energy sector, with a primary focus on Transmission schemes; both regulated (eg National Grid) and un-regulated.
The role encompasses the management of estimating activities across transmission infrastructure projects including substations, cable systems, grid connections and associated balance of plant. The Lead Estimator will provide technical and commercial leadership throughout the bid process, ensuring estimates accurately reflect project scope, risks, opportunities and delivery strategies.
Working closely with operational, engineering, procurement and commercial teams, the postholder will play a key role in securing profitable work and supporting the growth of the Energy Infrastructure business.
We can be flexible on location however there will be some requirement to travel.
- Lead the development and preparation of electrical estimates for transmission projects ranging from 132kV to 400kV.
- Manage the full estimating process from initial enquiry through to tender submission.
- Review client documentation, technical specifications, drawings and scope requirements.
- Ensure estimates are aligned with Client specifications, standards and delivery requirements.
- Coordinate estimating resources and allocate workload across the estimating team.
- Mentor and develop estimators, promoting best practice and continuous improvement.
- Lead tender review meetings and bid strategy discussions.
- Develop estimating plans and submission programmes to meet client deadlines.
- Coordinate inputs from engineering, procurement, planning and commercial functions.
- Support the preparation of technical and commercial submissions.
- Participate in client clarifications, negotiations and post-tender discussions.
- Present estimates and bid recommendations to senior management for approval as part of group governance requirements.
- Develop effective relationships with National Grid and other stakeholders and key supply chain partners.
- Identify commercial, technical and programme risks associated with projects.
- Prepare risk and opportunity assessments during tender development.
- Ensure appropriate allowances, contingencies and qualifications are incorporated.
- Support contract reviews including FIDIC, JCT, NEC, ECC and EPC forms of contract.
- Work closely with commercial teams to optimise bid strategies and margins.

What you'll bring:
- Significant experience in electrical estimating within the power transmission or utilities sector.
- Proven track record of leading bids for National Grid (or similar) transmission projects.
- Experience estimating projects within the 132kV to 400kV transmission environment.
- Strong understanding of transmission substations, grid connections and associated infrastructure.
- Experience of FIDIC, JCT, NEC and EPC contracting arrangements.
- Demonstrable leadership experience managing estimating teams and complex bids.
- Experience working within regulated utility or major infrastructure environments
- Full UK Driving licence
