Lead Forward Deployed Engineer
City of London, hybrid (2-3 days in the office or on client site)
Up to £130,000 + equity
You take the first scoping call. You design the solution. You write the code. You're in the room when it goes live in the client's business. Then you do it again, with a team you've built.
That's the job. Product engineering with the customer sat next to you, plus a leadership layer being created as the delivery function scales.
The company
A London insurtech building the platform that specialty and commercial (re)insurance runs on. Broker submissions arrive as messy documents. The platform ingests them, structures the data, triages the risk, builds the contract, and tells the underwriter whether to accept, refer or decline based on risk profile and portfolio fit.
They're live with major carriers and syndicates in the London market, closed a significant Series B to fund US expansion, and run a dedicated research division looking at what agentic AI does to specialty insurance.
The team
Around 22 people in delivery today: Forward Deployed Engineers, delivery managers, QA, subject matter experts and solutions architects. A senior technical architect and further engineers joining now, business analysts recruiting after that. Roughly a dozen clients live, more signed and waiting to start.

The stack
The interesting part. The platform is built on a functional core, and day to day you'll work in their own domain-specific functional language. It feels spreadsheet-like to use and sits much closer to Haskell than to anything object-oriented, which means most people arriving here are learning a genuinely different way of thinking rather than swapping syntax.
Nobody expects you to turn up fluent. Full training is provided and they have a track record of teaching it. Commercial Haskell is gold dust if you have it. Scala, F#, OCaml, Elixir or Clojure is a strong signal. But plenty of the team came from mainstream backgrounds, and strong engineers out of Java, C#, TypeScript, Python or Go land here well.
The real filter is whether you've shipped serious enterprise SaaS across the full lifecycle, and whether you're the kind of engineer who finds an unfamiliar paradigm interesting rather than inconvenient.
Alongside the core language you'll be building and managing integrations into complex legacy enterprise estates, so API and systems integration depth matters.
What you'd own
- Lead and grow a team of engineers. Objectives, feedback, getting people to the next level.
- Turn client business requirements into working software in the platform's functional language.
- Design and deliver formal specifications for insurance products across lines like marine, aviation and political violence.
- Build and manage integrations across complex enterprise estates.
- Own the proof-of-value and pilot projects. These are the ones that win the next contract and steer what product builds next.
- Be the technical partner senior client stakeholders actually want in the room.

You'll fit if
- You've led engineers and enjoyed it, and you still write code.
- You've shipped real enterprise SaaS, full lifecycle.
- You're up for learning a functional language and a different way of thinking.
- You're calm and credible with demanding stakeholders.
- Scale-up ambiguity energises you rather than annoys you.
Insurance or regulated industry background is a leg-up, not a filter.
The package
Up to £130,000 base, equity and stock options, private medical, income protection, life cover at 4x salary, enhanced maternity and paternity, 28 days plus bank holidays, pension and nursery salary exchange, learning allowance and leave for conferences or exams, home office allowance and a MacBook, on-site gym, financial wellbeing platform, EAP and regular socials.
