Senior Java Developer – Contract
Location: Manchester, Leeds or Birmingham
Working Pattern: 60% office-based
Contract: 12 months
IR35: Inside IR35
About the Role
We are looking for experienced Senior Java Developers to join a large-scale digital engineering programme, developing and supporting robust software products that deliver important citizen-facing services.
You will work as a senior member of an Agile, multi-disciplinary engineering team, contributing to software design, development, testing, and production support. You will also provide technical guidance and mentoring to other Software Engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver high-quality Java software products and services.
- Transform business and user requirements into production-ready code.
- Design and develop reusable libraries, services, and components.
- Ensure applications are robust, resilient, scalable, and secure.
- Contribute to technical design and longer-term product strategies.
- Provide technical guidance and support to other Software Engineers.
- Coach and mentor junior and developing engineers.
- Collaborate with Technical Architects, Principal Engineers, and wider technical teams.
- Investigate and resolve complex application and infrastructure issues.
- Provide 3rd-line support for products, including occasional out-of-hours support where required.
- Develop comprehensive automated unit and integration tests.
- Contribute to engineering standards, best practices, and community discussions.
- Produce clear technical documentation.
- Support integration activities and infrastructure maintenance.
- Identify risks and contribute to continuous improvement across engineering teams.

Technical Skills
Essential:
- Strong commercial experience with Java
- Strong Spring Boot experience
- AWS experience
- Apache Kafka experience
- MongoDB experience
- Microservices architecture
- REST APIs and system integration
- Automated unit and integration testing
- Strong understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle
- Experience working within Agile/Scrum environments

Senior-Level Experience
We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate:
- Significant hands-on Java development experience.
- Experience working on complex, production-scale systems.
- Experience supporting and mentoring junior Software Engineers.
- Ability to provide technical guidance and contribute to design decisions.
- Experience working with architects and other engineering teams.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Experience supporting live/production applications.
- Understanding of resilience, stability, availability, and performance.
- Ability to identify risks and contribute to technical improvements.
- Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be a hands-on Senior Java Engineer with strong experience across:
- Java + Spring Boot + AWS + Kafka + MongoDB
You should be comfortable taking ownership of complex development work, supporting production systems, and helping less-experienced engineers develop their technical capabilities.
