About The Role
FDM Group is seeking experienced Lead Java Engineers to join our dynamic team supporting a major enterprise technology modernisation programme for a global systems integrator client. This role is pivotal in leading the design, development, and enhancement of critical digital services that underpin high-volume business operations and public-facing services. The position offers an initial 5-month contract with excellent prospects for extension, and it is primarily remote, with occasional travel to the client site in Telford.
This opportunity allows you to contribute significantly to the modernization of a large-scale legacy platform, focusing on improving system resilience, maintainability, security, and operational performance through the adoption of modern engineering practices and technologies. It is an ideal role for a technically skilled leader who enjoys remaining hands-on while guiding teams, mentoring engineers, and delivering scalable enterprise solutions within complex environments.
Qualifications
- Extensive experience leading the development of enterprise applications using Java in a commercial setting.
- Proven expertise in building applications and APIs with Spring Boot.
- Experience developing automated tests using JUnit and related frameworks.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate engineering teams within Agile delivery environments.
- Strong background in producing technical designs and making architectural decisions.
- Ability to translate complex business requirements into robust and scalable technical solutions.
- Deep understanding of object-oriented design principles, design patterns, and best practices in software engineering.
- Experience conducting code reviews, enforcing development standards, and ensuring high-quality deliverables.
- Proficiency with source control systems and collaborative development workflows.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Experience mentoring and developing technical talent within delivery teams.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
- Self-motivated, delivery-focused, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and workstreams effectively.

Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, and ongoing maintenance of enterprise Java applications utilizing modern frameworks and engineering practices.
- Provide technical leadership across Scrum teams, supporting the modernization of legacy platforms and services.
- Define technical approaches, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, maintainable, and supportable within the enterprise environment.
- Design and oversee the development of RESTful APIs and microservices using Java and Spring Boot.
- Collaborate with Architects, Delivery Managers, and business stakeholders to shape solution designs and technical roadmaps aligned with project goals.
- Provide oversight of software development activities, ensuring adherence to engineering best practices, code quality, and documentation standards.
- Lead code reviews, establish high standards for testing, documentation, and deployment processes.
- Support testing, deployment, defect resolution, and live service operations to ensure seamless delivery.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives across engineering teams and delivery processes to enhance efficiency and quality.
- Manage technical risks, dependencies, and issues across multiple workstreams, proactively addressing challenges.
- Mentor and coach Senior, Mid-Level, and Junior Engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and growth.
- Participate in Agile ceremonies, contribute to sprint planning, and support delivery planning activities.
- Ensure all solutions comply with security, governance, operational, and quality standards.
- Provide regular progress updates, technical reports, and insights to programme stakeholders to facilitate informed decision-making.
