About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Java Engineer to join our dynamic team within the Modernisation Programme at Tax Admin. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead technical design and development efforts in a fast-paced, innovative environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for guiding the technical direction of services, collaborating closely with architects, QA leads, engagement managers, and development teams to ensure the delivery of high-quality solutions. The position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving, strong leadership capabilities, and a deep understanding of modern software engineering practices. Based in Telford, the role involves working two days per week in the office, with the remainder of the work conducted remotely.

Qualifications

  • Strong background in software engineering with expertise in Java and Spring frameworks.
  • Experience working with Kubernetes and platform integrations is essential.
  • Familiarity with React or similar front-end technologies is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, ability to lead and mentor team members, and a solid understanding of software design principles.
  • Proven track record of delivering complex projects within an Agile environment and experience in designing low-level services.
  • Hold or be eligible for BPSS clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical design process by creating comprehensive low-level designs (LLD) for specific services, building upon architectural work and ensuring alignment with project goals.
  • Collaborate with architects, QA leads, and engagement managers to translate high-level requirements into detailed technical specifications.
  • Drive the development and delivery of services, ensuring adherence to engineering principles, best practices, and shared components within the programme.
  • Mentor and guide development teams, fostering a culture of quality, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure that all technical solutions are scalable, secure, and maintainable, aligning with enterprise standards and industry best practices.
  • Participate actively in code reviews, testing, and deployment processes to uphold high standards of software quality.
  • Manage technical risks and issues proactively, providing solutions and alternatives to keep projects on track.
  • Contribute to the ongoing enhancement of engineering processes, tools, and methodologies within the team.
  • Engage with wider communities of Lead Engineers and the broader engineering community within the Modernisation Programme to share knowledge and promote best practices.
