Role Description
The Lead, Legal and LawTech (Volunteer) will oversee legal strategy and technology-driven legal initiatives across Abeyie Innovation UK. This remote volunteer role involves providing guidance on contracts, governance, regulatory compliance, and risk management, as well as identifying and implementing LawTech tools that streamline processes. The role includes collaborating with founders and project leads to review agreements, develop legal frameworks for partnerships and innovation projects, and advise on data protection and intellectual property considerations. The Lead will also research emerging trends in legal technology, recommend solutions for document automation and knowledge management, and help define policies that support ethical, inclusive, and sustainable innovation. The position requires proactive communication with cross-functional teams and participation in virtual meetings and planning sessions.

- Strong foundation in legal practice or legal studies, with knowledge of contracts, corporate or startup law, intellectual property, and regulatory compliance relevant to innovation and technology.
- Experience or demonstrated interest in LawTech, including legal automation tools, document management systems, and technology-enabled workflows for legal services.
- Ability to conduct structured legal and policy research, synthesize complex information, and translate findings into clear, actionable guidance for non-legal stakeholders.
- Proficiency in drafting, reviewing, and editing legal documents and policies with attention to detail, clarity, and risk assessment.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to work effectively with remote, cross-functional teams and diverse stakeholders.
- Comfort working in a volunteer capacity within an early-stage, mission-driven organization, with a proactive and solutions-focused mindset.
- Familiarity with the UK legal and innovation ecosystem is beneficial; experience with startup environments, social impact initiatives, or technology-focused organizations is an advantage.
- Relevant academic background in Law, Legal Studies, Public Policy, or a related discipline; professional qualifications or membership in a legal body are a plus but not strictly required.
