- You will be working an average of 37 hours per week. This role is shift-based and includes early starts, late finishes, weekends, and bank holiday working.
- You must be able to arrange your own transport to ensure timely arrival for early and late shifts.
- Location: this role covers Liverpool Street, Ipswich, Colchester, Norwich and Southend, with regular travel across the Greater Anglia network.
- Employment is subject to satisfactory Right to Work checks, a DBS check, and a safety‑critical medical assessment.

The Role
We are seeking four highly capable, safety-focused and people-oriented Lead Mobile Engineering Manager’s (LMEM) to provide frontline engineering support while leading our Mobile Engineering Manager (MEM) and LORT teams across the Greater Anglia network.
Reporting to the Engineering Deployment Manager (EDM), you will play a key role in delivering a safe, consistent and high-performing 24/7 engineering response. Alongside undertaking the operational duties of a Mobile Engineering Manager, you will support the day-to-day leadership of the team, ensuring effective resource management, colleague development, operational resilience and engineering assurance. You will also act as a key point of contact for operational, technical and people-related matters, working closely with Fleet Control and other stakeholders to support service delivery and fleet performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake the full operational duties of a MEM, providing 24/7 frontline engineering response and acting within your competence and company authorisation.
- Provide shift leadership, guidance and first-line management to MEMs and LORTs
- Allocate work, prioritise deployments and manage operational coverage in conjunction with Fleet Control.
- Lead on-site engineering response, fault diagnosis, safety assessment and recovery activities
- Apply approved mitigations and authorise defined degraded operation in accordance with DOTE and controlled instructions.
- Manage annual leave, sickness, short-notice absence, roster coverage and associated team records.
- Conduct regular 1-to-1s, supporting colleague welfare, performance, development and competence.
- Provide first-line assurance of DST entries, work orders, incident reports and engineering evidence.
- Ensure vehicles, tools, equipment, consumables and stores remain available, compliant and fit for purpose.
- Coach, mentor and support MEMs and LORTs, promoting consistent standards and continuous development.
- Act as the first point of escalation for operational, technical, performance and team-related matters.
- Maintain strong relationships with Fleet Control, TSD, Network Rail, technical teams, OEMs and external partners.
- Provide regular operational, performance and people-management updates to the Engineering Deployment Manager.
- Support continuous improvement, incident investigations, fleet reliability and performance initiatives.
- Deputise for the Engineering Deployment Manager as required.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
We’re Looking for Candidates Who Have:
- NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in an engineering discipline.
- Full, valid UK driving licence and able to meet Company requirements for driving company vehicles.
- ONC/HNC (or equivalent) in engineering, STEM or related field desirable.
- Proven experience in rolling stock engineering, incident response or safety-critical railway operations
- Supervisory or team leadership experience, including supporting colleague welfare, performance, development and competence.
- Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word (Power BI desirable).
- Safety aware, with a strong understanding of railway safety management systems, risk assessment and competence management.
- Experience leading on-site engineering response, fault diagnosis, safety assessment and recovery activities.
- Ability to allocate work, prioritise deployments and manage operational coverage in conjunction with Fleet Control.
- Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
