National Highways have an excellent opportunity for a Lead Operational Technology Specialist: Video Products to join our Digital Services team.

The Lead OT Technology Specialist: Video Products will be the leading technical specialist for the support of roadside video technology products and systems across the Strategic Road Network. These services provide Operations with the ability to safely monitor and manage traffic, incidents and network conditions through video technologies, enabling informed operational decision-making and supporting the delivery of timely and accurate information to our customers.

Please note this position can be based from any of our UK offices however travel to other offices to attend team meetings will be required.

What you'll be leading on

  • Act as the technical authority for Video Products, providing technical leadership, governance and assurance to ensure solutions are safe, compliant and aligned with National Highways standards.
  • Define and develop the technical strategy, architecture, specifications and technology roadmap for Video Products, driving innovation, service reliability, operational resilience and improved safety across the Strategic Road Network.
  • Collaborate with senior stakeholders across National Highways to shape technical proposals, influence business cases and provide expert guidance on current and emerging video technologies.
  • Lead engagement with suppliers and procurement teams, ensuring new technologies, commercial solutions and system designs align with long-term architecture, open standards and organisational objectives.
  • Build capability across the Operational Technology community by mentoring colleagues, sharing technical expertise and translating complex technical concepts into clear, accessible information for a range of stakeholders.
  • Provide technical input and expertise to support assurance activities, including testing, acceptance and witnessing of products, working with the supply chain to ensure solutions meet performance, cybersecurity, interoperability and operational requirements.

  • Proven experience in Operational Technology (OT), video surveillance, Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) or other mission-critical environments, with a strong understanding of safety, resilience and high-availability systems.
  • Strong technical knowledge of video technologies, including CCTV, Video Management Systems (VMS), video transmission and associated infrastructure, with experience developing technical specifications, standards, architectures and governance frameworks.
  • Experience working with camera technologies, video management platforms and integrated operational systems. Knowledge of ONVIF standards, video analytics and wider transport technology frameworks such as UTMC, NTCIP or DATEX II would be advantageous.
  • The ability to translate complex business requirements into practical technical solutions, influence technical decisions and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience developing technology strategies, roadmaps or standards, with the ability to provide technical leadership, resolve complex technical challenges and ensure services meet business and operational needs.
  • Working knowledge of IP networking, systems integration and the interfaces between video platforms and centralised traffic management systems. Experience of how video technologies support the management of incidents, congestion and network operations would be advantageous.
