About the role
As Lead Phlebotomist, you will play a pivotal role in delivering a high-quality, efficient and patient-focused phlebotomy service across Welbeck Oxford. You will be responsible for leading the day-to-day operation of the phlebotomy function, ensuring the highest standards of patient care, safety and service delivery are consistently maintained.
Reporting to the Clinical Services Manager, you will provide leadership, guidance and support to the phlebotomy team, helping to create a positive and collaborative working environment. You will oversee service standards, support workforce planning, maintain compliance with clinical governance requirements and work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues to ensure patients receive an exceptional experience throughout their diagnostic journey.
This is an exciting opportunity to help establish and shape the phlebotomy service within a brand-new healthcare facility. It is ideally suited to an experienced Phlebotomist who is ready to step into a leadership role, or an established Lead Phlebotomist seeking the opportunity to make a significant impact within a growing organisation.
Overview of key responsibilities
- Lead the day-to-day operation of the phlebotomy service across the centre
- Ensure blood collection procedures are carried out safely, efficiently and in accordance with best practice
- Deliver a high standard of patient-centred care and support throughout the patient journey
- Supervise, support and develop members of the phlebotomy team
- Coordinate staff rotas and ensure appropriate service coverage at all times
- Monitor service performance and identify opportunities for continuous improvement
- Ensure accurate patient identification and specimen labelling processes are followed
- Maintain compliance with infection prevention, health and safety and clinical governance requirements
- Act as a point of escalation for complex patient or service-related issues
- Work collaboratively with consultants, nursing teams, laboratory providers and operational colleagues
- Support recruitment, onboarding, training and competency assessment activities
- Maintain accurate records and ensure documentation is completed in accordance with organisational policies
- Participate in audits, quality assurance activities and service development initiatives
- Provide hands-on phlebotomy support as required to meet service demands

About you
You will already have significant experience working as a Phlebotomist within a healthcare environment and will be passionate about delivering an outstanding patient experience. You understand the importance of providing safe, compassionate and professional care, particularly when supporting patients who may be anxious or apprehensive.
Ideally, you will have experience supervising or supporting colleagues and will be confident leading by example. You are organised, approachable and highly attentive to detail, with the ability to maintain quality and accuracy while working in a fast-paced environment.
Your communication and interpersonal skills enable you to build trusted relationships with patients, consultants and colleagues alike. You take pride in maintaining high clinical standards and are motivated by delivering a service that places patient care at its heart.
You will also bring:
- A recognised phlebotomy qualification or equivalent training
- Significant experience working within a phlebotomy service
- Previous team leadership or supervisory experience would be advantageous
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong organisational and prioritisation abilities
- High levels of accuracy and attention to detail
- A calm, professional and patient-focused approach
- Knowledge of infection prevention and clinical governance requirements
- Confidence using healthcare systems and Microsoft Office applications
- A commitment to quality improvement and continuous professional development

Recruitment Process
For this role, there will potentially be two stages;
Stage 1 – Shortlisting outcome - 14th September
Stage 2 – Interviews (Face to Face) between 21st - 25th September
