We Are National Grid

We are at the heart of energy. From heating homes to making sure businesses fire on all cylinders, we’re using our engineering excellence to connect people and the planet. We’re also looking to the future – innovating, inventing, and transforming – to make possible the energy systems of tomorrow. And that’s why there’s never been a more exciting time to join us and help us to make a difference to people’s lives every day.

We’re Looking for a Lead Portfolio Engineer

You will work within a multi-disciplined team to outperform against National Grid’s regulatory commitments on network reliability outcomes and incentives. You will be accountable for the end-to-end commercial and investment performance of a given asset-specific portfolio, ensuring that investments are managed to cost and programme and driving the timely development of projects through the pre-construction phases, including sanction, tendering/procurement process, contract award, handover to delivery, site installation, commissioning, and close-out. You will act as the senior commercial interface for Asset Management teams on that portfolio, provide technical leadership to other Portfolio Engineers, and deputise for the Commercial and Portfolio Manager at governance forums where required.

This role is peripatetic and includes a job requirement vehicle, along with a £4,500 annual market supplement. We encourage a hybrid working approach and are happy to discuss any additional flexibility in working patterns or requirements that may help make this role work for you.

What You’ll Do

  • Own the investment process for their asset portfolio, from need identification through to sanction, contract award and handover into delivery.
  • Lead tracking and reporting on investment and asset portfolio cost, programme and other KPIs performance in line with regulatory requirements and outperformance targets.
  • Own the completion of Regulatory Reporting Packs (RRPs) and the eventual close-out of RIIO-T2 for their specific asset investment portfolio.
  • Provide a key commercial and investment process interface for Asset Management teams on their specific portfolio.
  • Ensure that all required governance documentation across all project phases is completed to the highest possible standard and in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that core data for their portfolio of investments is maintained to the highest levels of quality and accuracy.
  • Provide technical leadership, coaching and quality assurance to other engineers in the team, including reviewing sanction and governance documentation prior to submission.
  • Provide accurate and timely financial forecasts for portfolio of investments during the QRF process.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
