Lead Project Engineer

Newbury (Hybrid)
£90,000 + bonus

We're hiring on behalf of a fast-growing, well-funded technology company building security systems that combine software and physical devices. Their platforms are used to protect people and high-value sites, and the business is scaling rapidly.

The role

We're looking for a Lead Project Engineer to build, from the ground up, how engineering delivery actually works as the company scales. This isn't a role where you inherit an existing process, you'll design and stand up a lightweight requirements-management practice, own project planning and tracking across multiple engineering disciplines, and take responsibility for how complex system components integrate with one another.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

You'll start hands-on, doing the work yourself, before growing and leading a small team of business analysts and systems engineers as the practice matures.

What you'll be doing

  • Designing and implementing a requirements management and traceability process from scratch, appropriate to a fast-scaling technical organisation
  • Owning delivery planning, tracking and reporting across software, data and systems engineering teams
  • Managing interface control and integration dependencies across a complex, multi-disciplinary system
  • Building and leading a small team as the function grows
  • Working closely with senior engineering leadership to shape how the practice evolves

What we're looking for

  • Proven experience building a requirements or engineering-process practice from nothing within a complex, multi-team technical environment
  • Strong working knowledge of tools such as Azure DevOps, DOORS, Jama or Polarion
  • Technical credibility, comfortable reading code and understanding distributed, integrated systems well enough to challenge engineering decisions
  • Sound judgement on how much process is right for a scaling organisation, rather than a preference for heavyweight frameworks
  • Eligible for UK Security Clearance (existing clearance a plus)
  • Experience working in aerospace, aviation, military or defence
